Have this down as first choice on the CAO. Was 440 points last year.Im pretty confident I'll get that (got 440 in the Mocks). But whenever I look at the details of the course I can't help but noticing that the average intake each year is 15!!! I dont like the sound of that. The regular Commerce course takes like 300 people. Can anyone confirm this for me? If I get in i'd love to have such a small class much better for making new friends. Also can anyone tell me why this course is so much more points than the other commerce with language courses? Also does anyone know where the majority of the people go for the year in France? I'd love to go down the south for some sunshine!

ya the average intake is usually about 15 a year! the reason commerce/business degrees with french are usually higher points is becasue there is much more people doing LC french and continuing on with it than say spanish or italian, but there is still about the same number of places for them! supply and demand!

I think you are merely understanding the 'intake' aspect. Intake refers to the amount of places being filled by applicants with sufficient points and not that there are 20, 30, 40 etc. places and only 15 or so odd are taking them i.e. intake of 15 does not mean there is surplus supply!
Moreover, you will be in your set class of ~ 15 only for French lectures, tutorials and language labs of which there are in total 6 hours a week.

For Economics, I believe B.Comm French share a lecture hall with B.Comm German and Arts Economics. Basically, there will be about 200+ in your Econ lecture hall.
Whereas, B.Comm, B.Corp Law, B.Comm Spanish, B.Comm Italian and B.I.S all share the same lecture hall but different to B.Comm French (~ 350 students.)
However, for Accounting, B.Comm French is mixed in with the aforementioned
    larger group of 350+.
The mix also applies to the other Comm. subjects like Business Law, Marketing etc.
If anything, you are exposed to huge amounts of new people!!

I would assume the main reason for the points being higher for this course is the simple fact that French is the most widely spoken language in the European Commission, Parliament etc. and, after English, probably on of the more important trade languages as many important industries are based in France.

Erasmus varies from Toulouse, Marseille, Poitiers. Yes, all South! Only problem is that only 4 people can go to one university, so you're going to be split up. Worse case scenario could be; 5 people want to do Erasmus thus, one person must go to a French college alone.

will someone please wave a magic wand and make the points come down for this course ... im borderline 440 points like and really worried wont get the points :(

Anyone else want to confirm that they are going for this course? Provided we get in we could end up becoming best friends! Only 15 in the course so you are going to get to know everyone really well! Will even have to share accomodation in a foreign country!

When I was at the open day it only seemed to be girls who were checking out the International French and Italian courses which would suit me down to the ground!!!

I was really worried about getting the B3 before the exam but after that disgrace of a test I'm 100% certain ive got it. Expecting an A2 after that test and depending on how the oral went theres and outside chance of an A1

I did Commerce and French was around 490 the year I did it so it's come down a good bit & may well drop a little bit more. In fairness its a savage course to do - so much craic. Can't say I'd much interest in the academic side of it but you didn't have to do that much to get by compare to tougher courses like science.

15-16 in the class you'll get to know them all really well - lifelong friends especially after the year abroad. If you think you have good friends in Secondary school wait til you you've finished your degree in commerce and french.

As Bartlett said, It is a fantastic course. I just finished my degree in it this year and by the end of it you will have made some great friends.

15 is just an approx number, When we started in first year there was 18 in our class, though 2 had left by the end of the year.

You have french about 6 hours a week with the same group so you get to know each other really well! The french co-ordinator Ruadhán is lovely as well.

Then for the rest of your commerce subjects you'll be mixed in with the rest of commerce.

Everyone MUST do a year abroad which is fantastic :)!!! Ye'll be able to choose from the following places:

Toulouse (where I went......which is an amazing city) Highly Recommend it!! :D
    Montpellier
    Marseille
    Troyes
    Clermont-Ferrand
    Poitiers
    Strasbourg
    Rennes

If you have any other questions about the course let me know :)!!

Im in Arts doing French and Spanish, doing the Erasmus is Spain but just wanted to add in here about Montpellier, that's where I'm living at the moment just for the summer and I'd definitely recommend it to any of you. It's known as being a major student city, bit like the Galway of France! Definitely, when second year comes round I'd say apply for Montpellier, you will absolutely LOVE it

If you're doing it in Galway, they don't have any University Connections in Paris. Though having said that, Troyes is located about an hour outside of Paris in the Champagne Region ;)!! You'd be in Paris in an hour on the train!!

You'll get loads of visitors during the year..... amazing how many people fit in a bed when you're on Erasmus!!

I'm thinking about studying Int. Commerce with French at NUIG, I'm just wondering what career opportunities await after you finish?

Also, how is it with regards to workload/lecture hours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭AJ6000

The French is 5-6 hours a week and I couldn't talk up the lecturer enough. By far the best lecturer in the entire college. You will love them. The Commerce side might be for everyone as in first year there is no choice so you have to do subjects that you might hate but once you get through first year you get quite a bit of choice in 2nd year. Hours in first year are around 18-21/22ish. It varies in first and second semester but I would definitely recommend the course.
