Just in case any one might find this handy , cheque i recieved today was for €1300 . Decided to make a few calls .

    Social Welfare Head office
An Post can only cash cheques up to €600 , id have to lodge it . Asked what would i do i had no acc, she told me to lodge it into someone elses acc and wait for it to clear and get the money off them:pac:

    An Post.
No way we could cash it were only authorised to cash cheques up to €1200 , no movement , i even asked '' who owns An Post'' is it not part their cheque after all. Must be lodged into acc and takes 12 yes 12 working days to clear

Bank of Ireland Head office .
They were the issuer of said cheque , it must be lodged into an acc and will take 3-5 working days to clear

This was meant to be helpfull to any one that happens to be lucky and in my position , i was lucky enough to find a new job before my claim was processed.
I found myself with a piece of paper which i was assured (when i waited 3 hours to sign off as no phones were being answered) would be cashed by An Post.
I was lucky i had a family that helped me out so did'nt realy worry about how long it took to sort out my claim , but i would be so pissed off if i was like the vast magority of this country that need help.
After all if An Post '' a state owned buisness'' are refusing to change cheques , what hope do we have. I WAS LUCKY

An Post has not been 'state-owned' since 1984! Common misconception.

just slightly off-topic- by the time my claim has gone through, it seems I could be due in or around €2000 in back pay.

Will AN POST be adequately equipped to pay me out that sum on the day in question?

It used be with the old Bank method that the figure went into your account and that was that.

Will AN POST be able to deal with a situation where a person goes in and is expecting to receive such a {high} figure??

Or will I too be subject to some paper-trail fantasy which ultimately involves more time and more wait?

    Many thanks.

I work in post office, it has nothing to do with it being too 'high' for an post (payments can be in 100.000's, just depends on what type of transaction it is). Social welfare cheques are only cashed up to the value of 1600 cos of agreement with DSW. I don't know why they issue cheques they dont want cashed, its frustrating for us too, Im sure they have their reasons! Your choices are lodge to an post savings acc if you have one, ask SW to give you 2 cheques instead of the 1 (theyre not as obliging as they used to be with this though) or lodge it in bank.

They wont just hand me a wedge over the counter, no? he he he...the thought of poor old Kitty in my local just handing me 2-G's. She is such a snoop!! The whole village would know by lunch time!!

I do not have an AN POST savings account.

How do I get it lodged to my account??

    Thanks again.

You could lodge it to a bank account.

Yes, I know, I am assuming that when my claim comes through the Post Office will have the cash for me, no?

Will they not just hand me the cash?

I have a bank account, sure, but how do I get the Post-Mistress to lodge it for me? Just give her my details over the counter?

    Cheers.

No problem he said if its not your bank as long as you have some photo ID.

What a truly f***ed up country this ,

How are they supposed to know it's definetly you, and that it is rightfully your cheque that you're trying to cash?.

Lets say I robbed your cheque, and walked into a bank and cashed it - how pissed off would you be if they did not do the appropriate checks?.

The Post Office won't accept a SW cheque for more than 1600 so you have to go to bank. Theres AIB banking in an post but you need to go to bank itself with acheque as we won't accept cheque on their behalf.

I don't think that was the point

I think you got lucky with AIB, I didn't know banks cashed cheques anymore.
Those types of policies increase bank/post office efficiency while only hindering a small amount of of the population.
I have experienced that kind of thing myself but I wouldn't necessarily say it's a bad thing.
The banks/post offices make money (present circumstances aside) which they are entitled to do, and the government can't exactly hand you cash.

I'm no cloudymouse but I would say its the inconvenience of the post office not cashing it and that a 3rd party would cash it when AN POST wouldn't.

Fair point, and one I believe Corkgal1981 clarified regarding the agreement between An Post and DSW after the OP quoted.

As I understand it, you can take the cheque to where you have an account and lodge it into the account.

It'll take a few days to clear but then you'll be able to withdraw the money.

So now we have 3 different ammounts allowed to be cashed by An Post as corkgal1981 states and she works in An Post.

''Social welfare cheques are only cashed up to the value of 1600 cos of agreement with DSW''.

€600 when i phoned Head office of SW.

    €1200 when i phoned GPO

€1600 From some one that works for An Post or as he / she calls it '' the post office.

I called the head office and they were unaware of any agreement of ammount that could be cashed at An Post, as far as they were aware it was €600 max

    Well frankly

I think this is probably the first time that cheques of this size have been distributed with any kind of regularity.

I mean, they're backlogged to kingdom come in SW, by the time you get your cheque and get your backdated pay it's been at least 8 weeks which means cheques of 1600.

But this isn't normal. It's because they're behind. Nobody was prepared for this, not SW, not the government, not An Post.

Good point Xiney! Nice to see someones got their thinking-cap on! I gave up! Different places are going to give different answers and as I read the term 'post-mistress' I knew we were dealing with a privately owned 'post office' (sorry for anyone who doesnt understand what a post office is!) in bally-gone-backward! There are obviously rules in place regarding maximum payable amounts etc but the sub-post offices MAY tend to do their own thing.

Its a bit too much to go into it all on boards! Basically the OP had a question, its been answered, best thing he can do is go to his local PO, see what the 'postmistress' says and go from there.
