Replacement keys for a Punto

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a back-up/replacement key for a Punto in Dublin?

One of the dealerships is quoting me €200 for a second key so I'm looking to see what my options are - am told a decent locksmith will do it for half the price or less but the only one recommended doesn't do Fiat keys.

Any suggestions on someone reliable and reasonably priced?

    which one did you ring

The dealership was the one in Airside, Swords. The locksmith that doesn't do Fiat keys was Keymasters on Dorset St.

    What year Punto?

1994-1999 Punto's you can get most Locksmiths to cut them for you as the key just has a pre-programmed transponder for the immobiliser - costs around €30-€40 to get it duplicated, the guy in Amiens street did one for me a few months ago for €32.

1999-2005 uses the Fiat Code 2 system which is a rolling code system - basically every time you insert your key into the ignition it generates a new code to start the car. These keys can only be got direct from Fiat and cost anywhere from €150-€230 a piece (& labour), and will require the car to be at the dealers to have the key programmed with your existing one and the car.

2005-present As above, except they use a flip-blade type key similar to VW or Audi, which means it's more expensive - not sure how much exactly, but I wouldn't expect it to be cheap.

It's a 01 Punto and does fit into the rolling code system bracket you describe. I had assumed Dealers were the only place to go as a result but was told earlier I could get the job done elsewhere. From what you say that's not the case, sadly!

€200 is the price I was quoted, which is a very large amount to pay. I know it's something that will prove a bargain should I ever lose the key I have at the moment but it's still hard to swallow.

I guess the dealers know they have you over a barrel when it comes to the newer keys so they can charge what they like.

It's a bargain when compared to the cost if you lose the key - you'll have to fork out for new locks, ignition, & ECU - which would exceed the value of the car if fitted by a dealer! (you could get the parts from a scrap car, but again it's still a hassle and major expense)

Ring around the dealers getting prices for parts & labour, try to play them against each other :p

I think I was talking to you about the same car on Twitter a few days ago :P

I think you were - just saw your twitter link now!

I'll ring around about it in the next few days and see if there are any changes in price elsewhere.

I'm resigned to the realisation that I need a second key, was just hoping I could get one from a locksmith as opposed to a dealer, which is always going to come at a premium.

    Thanks again.

Your second key is the same non-flip blade as the 99-05's had so theres nothing stopping you getting one of these if all you want is a spare and don't need the remote control.

If you lose a key all they do is remove its codes from the car, no need to replace the ECU. It'll still open the door and boot locks but won't started it...

Hi guys I have the same problem. Was quoted 180e by a dealer. Did you manage to find someone that would copy the key for less crazy money?
