we have a massey 399 straight six mowing silage and its as dead as a do-do. also it tends 2 blow out a bit of blue smoke when under pressure. anyway too decrease the smoke and increase power. granted it wasnt serviced since november but it hasnt done that much work since maby 50 hours or so.

Try changing the diesel filter, see if that gives you any more pep, might be no harm to do the air filter while you're at it.

Blue smoke usually means it's burning engine oil, and major surgery is usually required to fix that, at the very least a new set of piston rings. How many hours has it up?

there is over 8000 hours. it might be better just give rid of that for something newer before she blows up so. theres not a hole pile of blue smoke just when its cold and when under pressure ie going up a hile.

What the general consensus on the 399s? What HP are they?

Sounds like normal wear and tear, though it can't be far from the time when you will have to spend some money, either on it or changing to something newer.

We had one for most of the ninties, bought it new in '89, they are good solid machines but old technology, we changed as the machines we had behind it kept getting bigger and heavier. 100HP.

why does a 2nd hand MF 390 in the same condition as an MF 399 command a higher price when the 399 has more HP??

they usually but 390s on loaders and not the 399. you see the 390 is a 4 cyclinder which makes it lighter on juice than the six cyclinder 399.

I would'nt pay heid to the blue smoke as just about every 300 series tractor burns oil and gives out blue smoke even since new.

Another reason is irish farmers love the 390 and 390T. They are great machines, however we own a 4245, same HP as the 390T as far as I know, I wonder in a few years will they hold their value as much as the 390T. We have the snoopy bonnet and a loader, great loader tractor. I have herd bad things about the 4300 series though......
