Hi I just got a hardtail MTB bike mail order from germany, It a 19" frame, The stand over clearance between the tube and my bits it nearly non existent,1cm if that ! When I ride it feels ok but maybe i,m slightly reaching forward Just dont want to go all hassle send bike back to get a frame that too small. Am I mad thinking about stand over height/clearance? Always had at least 1 inch between crotch and the top of frame when not stood on pedals?

Any seasoned mtb riders could advise me on pros and cons of frame with no stand over clearance . Need mail this guy by tomorrow , Replys appreaciated. Thanks, I,m looking at doing some XC/ trail riding with bike.

Bloody mail order! Had no frame dimensions on listing just recommended frame size for rider height, mit 19 inch Rahmen(48 cm)(Körpergröße 1,65 ~1,80 cm;) i,m 171cm Should have went with instinct and got 17.5 frame.Always had 18" frames

Depending on how long the stem is at the moment you could get a shorter one to help the reach, this may have adverse effects on handling though. Regarding the standover height, I would be a bit wary of such a high bar - if you're off road the ground you're putting your foot down on might be much lower than the ground on which the tyres are on. I'm 6'2" and have a 17.5" frame - definately the way to go!

When I was looking at getting my mtb I think it said you need at least 1 inch clearance.
    I'm 5' 7" and have a 17"

Thanks for quick replys. I knew needed some clearance just trying to tell myself its right size so I don't have grief/cost to send back.Should better than buy online without frame geometry. Have enough clothes from ebay that never fit!. Its a cracker bike, very light full XTR and half price of any euro/US same specd bike ive seen

    Link to the bike?

Great components aren't worth a damn if the bike doesn't fit you.

German bikes tend to have higher top tubes / less compact geometry than others (on both road and mtb bikes I've seen).

My mtbs have 4-5 inches of clearance with my feet flat on the ground (all 19" / large, me - 6'2"). Yours definitely sounds too big.

If it's a fantastic bargain you could always sell the frame and replace it with something else.

Waiting on reply back for return. The 17.5 frame will be too small aswell. Leaving me with roughly 1.5" top tube clearance. Look at the sizing on listing page. I knew 19 was too big for me. But I work for german company and went by sizing recommendations for my height i,m in middle of his sizings for 19" frame ,And Zee germans are always right. Not this time. Geometry of frame is very big ,I,m sitting on toptube when not on pedals,my bike has 5 headset spacers aswell.. Regrettable isnt the word. Cant believe spent so much and dont even have it to spend!

Check out This is the sizing chart from fahrrad-ass.de..Its for MTB . not Roads bikes!

    frame size of 17.5 inch/44 cm (body height +/- 1,50~1,65 m /4.9 ft. - 5.4 ft.).

    19 inch/48 cm
    (body height +/- 1,65~1,80 m
    /5.4 ft. - 5.9 ft.)
    20.5 inch/52 cm (body height +/- 1,80~1,95 m /
    5.9 ft. - 6.4 ft.)
    22 inch/56 cm
    (body height +/- 1,95~2,10 m /
    6.4 ft. - 6.9 ft.)

The 19 " is huge for me .I,m just 5ft9" . Reminds me getting onto an old green steel raleigh I used to have ,And that was a 21"!

Would pay good money to see the 4ft 9" lad on 17.5" race the 5ft 4" guy on the 19". Like a scene from narthside ,Two kids on pair robbed huge mtbs! :D
