Can anyone who had a GPS tell me what the altitude gain was last Sunday on the Wicklow 200. My GPS (Forerunner 305) said 3,600m but I think thats too high. I imagine its about 2,800?

i'm afraid there's no 'right' answer on that one well from the garmins/software anyway, due to smoothing, gps inaccuracies people on here have reported between 2100 and 3100 or so .. 2,962 i think is what mine reported before smoothing

    2887m according to my 705

My 705 came up with 2905m ascent, 2914m descent, which is remarkably consistent when I consider my commute to and from work each show descent exceeding ascent by about 40m (which implies my house sinks 80m each day, but rises back up overnight!!!)

I know I risk sounding stupid here, but I hope ye're not talking about the height of the mountains, there are no mountains above 1,050m in Ireland. 3,500 meters = snow in July. I know this, I used to live in Switzerland. Any how, if I have misunderstood the question could someone explain what this is.

its total assent we are talking about rather than a single peak(so we went up and down a few of the mountains in wicklow and alot of rolling hills, so no individual peak was anything like 2000m)

It's basically the gross amount of uphill riding. If you go up 100m, then down 50m, and up a further 100m, your net ascent is 150m. However your gross ascent, as recorded on your GPS, would be 200m, with descent recorded ar 50m. The GPS basically records all the undulations. If you start and finish at the same place your ascent and descent should, by definition, be equal, although the GPS is normally not accurate enough to get this spot on.

Thanks for that explaination, I wasn't trying to be smart earlier.

Maybe you have a problem with subsidence?

My own Garmin likes to put my house under the sea- or at least used to like doing so until the altimeter went completely kaput (actually it still logs, just won't tell me while I'm on the bike- I think the GPS bit works but not the barometric.)

This is generally not a problem as my flat is on the top floor.
