I presume your company is a charity or other voluntary sector organisation?

Because otherwise it's pretty flipping low to expect someone to work on a big job like that for free, for the commercial gain of your new company!

I have altered the job description.

The main objective is to give someone who is finding it hard to get a job a good reference which will get them a better job.

I have worked on many volunteer jobs for the same reason. It is better than sending out 200 Cvs a week. We are looking for either those with 3 years commercial experience or graduates with a college Degree in Web Development.

I want to give a talented developer a chance to get their foot on the job ladder. There maybe a job offer in the long run The opportunity doesn't come around often.

society needs more Altruisits like this person :D ...no wait, if there were more people like him, we'd all be working for nothing.

normal procedure is that you pay someone for their work AND give them a good reference at the end of it if they do a nice job.

by the way, i'm looking for a Chauffeur to drive me to work everyday. There's no pay involved but i'll give you a good reference.

Won't pay for a job which would normally command at least 30K. What a stingy, mean, exploitative, greedy, selfish, shameful offering. You should be really proud of yourself.

You mean apart from the references from the 3+ years of professional development experience they're supposed to have? Yeah, I can see that working out...

So getting someone to work for you for free is the secondary objective...? Riiight.

I reckon you'll have a better chance of getting someone willing to work for free if you change the following -
    3+ Years experience in PHP/MySQL
    Previous CMS experience essential

    - to read something like this -
    Knowledge of PHP/MySQL
    Previous CMS experience a bonus

Basically you're currently looking for a skilled, experienced PHP person to work "for experience". I'm sorry but someone with 3+ years PHP/MySQL experience does not need your help!

How would the minimum wage laws not apply here ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,563 ✭✭✭leeroybrown

So essentially the 'lucky' candidate gets to 'volunteer' for three months, disqualifying them self from social welfare payments and making it harder for them to search for work. All on the promise of a 'reference'. Hmm...

Unless things have changed a 'volunteer' has no specific legal status in Ireland. They're really just a worker who earns nothing willingly. So long as the volunteer doesn't get paid anything they aren't entitled to the minimum wage.

    What an insult

The IT Industry is under paid as is and now this sort of thing coming around!

I've met a few chancers in my time - this definitely takes the biscuit. Sad.

Op, you should try the colleges to find students who can take on this as part of their course work. Otherwise, you are either being incredibly naive or are as the other posters have pointed out.

And BINGO was his nameo... This is a final year project if I ever saw one. Might be worth contacting a lecturer in a computer science department in your local university. Or any university you may have attended.

You should pay the person minimum wage at least. Or a stipend. Or you could give them something which you could get cheap but would cost them a lot of money (perhaps a laptop) More of a gift rather than pay.

You could also consider outsourcing this. Lots of cheap labour abroad.

Well overpaid if you ask me. And seriously lacking in people that have reasonable expectations of remuneration based upon what they can actually do.

Seriously, no one with this level of experience needs to work for you for free just to get a reference.

If you want someone with experience you'll have to pay for it, otherwise take a chance on some student with NO experience who actually NEEDS some experience and is willing to work on this.

A pathetic attempt at exploiting someone by the OP. I truly hope he fails miserably

I don't agree..No regulation whatsoever of numbers entering IT industry..Very little job security..Constant updating of skills\exams...The only favourable thing is that people who think theres big money there leave as they have no interest in what they're doing..Cos to be honest an awful lot of businesses treat IT staff terribly IMHO..

Lads, stop feeding the troll, sorry I mean OP.

Every comment you post just puts his ridiculous request at the top of the forum again.

There is a god/karma/whatever, it will get him in the end.

I'm a graduate, went to college for four years, got a 2.1 degree, no sigh of getting started with work along with pretty much the majority of other graduates. so OP you seen this gap in the market and decided to exploit it by asking them to work for free? an apprentice gets **** wages even when he starts his apprenticeship and that's him knowing nothing walking onto a job yet he's getting "experience" how does it differ in this case?

    /puts the shoe in...walks away

Folks get used to it - the jobs market is overrun by people acting 'nice' but ready to ruin you, kill your career dead, and treat you like sh*t. I call these people tossers.

    Shame on this company...

Trying to take advantage from people in a tough spot thanks to the hard times... greed is an ugly thing.

I will make sure I advertise this despicable attempt at what can only be described as exploitation.

No point in denying it, you are what is wrong with this country.

every tom, dick, and Barry is trying to jump on the 'social networking' bandwagon  probably thinks he'll get a few thousand serial masturbators to sign up for dogging sessions and then sell his website to Rupert Murdoch for $800 million dollars.
