do a search for Laptopsdirect.ie here and you'll find all you need about them.

Your budget will really limit you to a second hand machine. Do you need any connections to hoop up with diagnostics software?

    Regards,
    Kieran

depending on connections needed, you could get a netbook with xp.
only way of getting new laptop with xp for that price. probably limited to usb with netbooks though

The kit you posted looks like a USB interface. If it is, you could get some of the Netbooks listed in your original link. If you are going to be doing alot of reading from the laptop go with a good second hand laptop.

few netbooks I've seen have those monitor connections so any monitor should allow you to read it a bit better.

I'd go as far as to say, most if not all netbooks i've seen have a vga out on them.

It'd be pretty suprising to see one without it...

Also op i was just looking at netbooks for another person who posted here earlier.

Stretch your budget 65 euro more and it's yours...

If it doesn't have to be top of the range netbook, the Eee 900, or even a 700, using VGA work just fine, silent too.. and given the environment of a garage, the SSD is a bonus, along with the quick dumping of data to an SD card.

The Eee 900 is about 185 new now. Cheaper second hand, adverts.ie has a few, but people are pumping ads with overvalued set prices.

Thanks to all for your replys...I was looking on ebay and there seems to be
few laptops going for the 200-250 euro price range...

Any tips/things to look out for when buying a second hand laptop??...Thanks,
    Row.

Batteries are likely to be close to dead, on older laptops. And the casing etc is likely to be showing it's age, although that's only cosmetic. Ebay can be good for a bargain if you know what you're after, but there are a lot of enormous rip offs on old secondhand laptops there too, so post here before parting with your cash if you decide to go the ebay route.

The amount of scamming on eBay with laptops, painful.
Adverts.ie might not be a bad place to start, you can meet face to face, which removes the (most of the) potential for messing.

Seriously, if you're just using diagnostic software, and you're in a fairly unforgiving workplace, dust, oil, etc.. I'd plump for a low end\middle of the road IBM ThinkPad, even as low as a T20 T21 model..

Long in the tooth, but hardy, and will most likely come in below your budget. Actually, T21 might be a bit low.. maybe push towards a T40 model.

Thanks to all of you for your help...;)
I just bought a Hp dv 2000 for under my budget...i googled this model
and alot of owners have/had problems with this m/c overheating and
    a poor battery life....
I got it on ebay....but it was sold locally so i had the chance to see the m/c in the flesh....it seems a pretty high spec m/c.
Maybe a little high for what i need for but it should do the job...hopefully...:)
I think these laptops sold new for around 1200 euro....
    Thanks again.

    Row.

Excellent. I think.. wasn't it the integrated graphics (nVidia) on that laptop that caused the problems?

    Nice find.
