    Hello all,

I recently applied for a job I am ideally qualified for. However, after only a day or two I receive an email saying I had not been successful. To say the least I was amazed at this response as well as the speed at which the company replied.

Is this the norm for most of us job seeking at the moment?

All can say is that its an employers market..You were probably a good match for the role..But they obviously have a good pick of people with more experience at the moment.(people they wouldnt have had to choose from 12 months ago or in 12 months time).Sometimes you'll find they're just fishing and hire no one..
Been there myself...Its not nice but all you can do is put it down to experience and (without wishing to sound corny) use it in a positive way for next interview....

yeah, unfortunately this is the norm....like the previous poster said, employers and the pick of the bunch and they can be choosy. I went for 2 interviews for job i could easily do or was well suited for but didn't get. Don't let this out you off though, keep looking and keep going for interviews. best of luck.

I've been there more than once and I know it's not nice. Just gotta pick yourself up and move on the the next one. I was left waiting 3 months on a NO answer recently. Killer.
Best of luck with the job hunting.

I applied for a job in Germany lately also I felt I was well able to do and had the relevant degrees

    never got a look in

the job is still on monster so its obviously not taken, not speaking German might be the problem but they could have said so

You should be happy you heard straight away. There's nothing worse than having 2 interviews, a week apart, then waiting 2 weeks only to be told you're unsucessful

Sadly, the norm is that you don't hear anything back at all! Sending you a response, any response, puts the company at the top end of HR performance at the moment.

I was particularly unimpressed with the company that interviewed me and three others. Not only did they not hire me, the also didn't even have the courtesy to let me know. When I rang a week later, I asked if it was possible to get any feedback, and the short answer was "no". When I do get a proper job in the future (the recession won't last forever), there's a certain budget hotel chain that I will do anything to avoid as a result.

the boom lasted about eight years, why wouldn't a recession last eight years?

You have to sell yourself at interview and be vague about the wages required.
You have to research the company to death and have a provable track record in what you are applying for. You may be asked to sit in and do parts of the job like I was so there is no point bluffing your way with imaginary skills and experience as you will be found out.
Be prepared to apply for zillions of jobs and doing plenty of interviews, I have done 4 or 5 at least but filter out most by phone call to fine tune requirements.
This saves time and money on both sides. I originally wanted to break into field service/sales support etc but have little or no recent experience in that area.I just wanted to get away from a large scale factory setting.
Reapply to companies that have turned you down previously as the CV's are not kept on file and this side of things, storing CV's, can be haphazard as the company has no legal obligation or consequences for doing it better. I have heard of people who applied 3 or 4 time for a wanted company and were eventually successful, some were even remembered in previous interview processes......it shows persistance and interest which is always good.
At the end of an interview thank the panel for their time and repeat how much you would love to work for their company etc.....big smile and show warmth and leave it at that. At least you will have given it your best shot.

I think myself that company's use these recruitment advertisments as a cheap form of advertising. Think about it, It costs a hell of a lot less to advertise on job sections of paper, websites, and radio than advertising their services. Also they are giving the impression to people not look for work that they are a successful expanding company to do business with! Hope that makes you feel a bit better!:D
