    From RTE
"Earlier this year, workers voted to accept proposals to secure a $40m (€28.5m) investment in the plant.

However, managers now claim that employees are failing to honour the agreement and that some staff are refusing to do overtime, which has led to work being turned away. "

Im sure there are plenty of people who would gladly work the overtime

I agree with you to an extent but I would really like to see what the whole agreement was between employer and employee before slamming either side.

The key words in that news story are "managers now claim".

It's difficult to comment without knowing the details but I suspect the overtime may be at the expense of the jobs of others. And, as IrishSpeedTraps has alluded to, why would you believe what 'management' claims?

A siptu guy was on the news saying that the overtime was unevenly distributed amongst people. I didn't think it was the unions job to say who should work overtime.

In my place of employment, there is very strict protocol regarding the distribution of overtime - agreed between management and the trade unions. Otherwise, there is a danger that it may be allocated unfairly.

You mean that the people actually performing better would do it.

So what if overtime is allocated 'unfairly'?

Isn't it the prerogative of management to decide who should be offered overtime?

No - that cronyism may not rear it's ugly head.

You belive that it is perfectly fair to discriminate?

Not if they enter into an agreement with employee representatives to use a set protocol.

Not if they enter into an agreement with employee representatives to use a set protocol.

Things change and people need to be flexible.
And things have changed in the past 18 months or so.
Adapt or die, that is the choice facing these workers.
Unfortunately it seems that they will obstinately refuse to do the former.
Remeber, if such businesses fail, the management will move on and will pick up another role. It is the workers who will struggle to do the same. Their attitude will only hurt themselves sadly.
Things have been good for them for a few years - they need to take some pain now - things will pick up again.
