Laptop monitor broken want to hook it up to the TV

I have been given a laptop that appears to have a broken screen. Simply can't see anything on it. So I decided I would use it as a media player with the TV. When I plug in the VGA cable and start up the laptop I see the windows welcome and warning about it not been closed down properly. Once it goes to windows proper the monitor goes into power save. I have tried Fn F3 andF5 but I can't seem to get the signal to the monitor to stay.

Any suggestions on what to do? I am working blind on the keyboard

Ok 1st issue i'll address on the 2nd poster.

You need a standard VGA cable which is on all monitors. If you want it to go to your TV you may need a vga to dvi cable depending on the connectors available on your TV.

now the 2nd issue on the 1st poster.
It seems like you need to enter safe mode to be able to change the power settings and display settings of your Laptop. When the system boots up do you get to see the post screen (manufacturers logo ie Dell)? If so tap F8 a few tiems and you'll see the windows start up options. Choose Safe mode.. then once in safe mode you can change your display settings "power management" set the monitor to "never turn off" pretty much turn everythng in there to "never". Then reboot...

Once it reboots you should be able to log in normally. Once logged in again go to the display settings and setup the display to your TV and make sure you set it as your primary display. That way everytime you power on your lappy it'll go straight to the TV settings you've saved and bam you're sorted.

    hope that helps.

another thing is the resolution the laptop is going into mightnt be supported by the tv... to test this you could go into safe mode like described above, or better yet select vga mode from the f8 boot menu, then set the resolution when you get into windows to something the tv supports

or connect a standard compter monitor boot to windows and reduce the resolution to one the tv will work with

Managed to sort it but never got to safe mode. F8 didn't seem to get it but there was just enough image to get to display settings via the laptop. Picked up a remote for the laptop and composite cable to hook to the TV for about €20 all in. It should do fine as a multimedia machine on the TV for something that was about to be thrown away.

Just when I say my screen is broken, literally it's become all multi coloured, and nothing is visible, it took a heavy fall,

I can hear the pc still booting up and everything like that,

just not able to navigate options on the pc, so safe-mode might not be an option here,

if I was to go without changing the resolution, would it be best to try it on an older tv?,

thanks for all the help :)...
