Thinking of putting a Wiki site together for tech support people to use as a bible on how to go about common tasks in an IT department.

I'd want people to contribute to it so it eventually gets built up enough that it covers everything.

    Stuff along the lines of:
How to create a Desktop PC Template
How to build the perfect server (OS plus configuration)
How to remotely rebuild a PC (Ghost/SMS)
How to create a load balanced web server
    How to configure your network
How to set up remote VPN connections (for secure citrix / ssh)
    How to back up
How to blah blah blah etc

Thought is that instead of people going out and researching products via their sales departments (waste of time), real word tech support could share their creative methods of getting stuff done.

So a) Would you use it and b) would you contribute to it?

    Cheers!

Id imagine most people will flick onto Google and pick one of the many websites covering the issues. Probably not much point reinventing the wheel!

Yeah I know but what bugs me is that although you'll find sales pages on products sites and resolutions to specific applications there's never a good unbiased guide on subjects like how to roll out software automatically to a domain.

I find if you google something like "roll out software to domain" you get rubbish results where as if you stick an application you know that does the task such as "sms" at the end of that then you're going to find results for that software.

For a small company I don't want to pay for SMS so I want to see how other small companies acheive the task at a low cost.

    Cheers for the feedback:D

Well, by all means, ill give you a hand if you go with it. A lot of time and effort for something that wont be seen as much - unless you decide to use it as a reference guide for people you know or whatever.

As you said most of the results you get are along the lines of see how to fix this problem for just $25 ala expert exchange etc.

I think if the site was well put together it has possibilities.
I am putting something together for the enterprise board in Limerick at the moment along the lines of a business start up bootcamp on the IT side as they are finding it hard to get unbiased advice for new companies starting up that is not a sales a pitch from resellers.

I think the step by step guide would work well with perhaps an faq for each process with the most common problems run into during each.

A howtoforge sort of site might be worth a try instead of a wiki ,

    http://www.howtoforge.com/

bit more work in one way - have to "accept" articles , upload them
bit less work the other - don't have to be looking through the wiki deleting (unintentionally) misleading stuff all the time

Mega idea though , start up companies ( and many more ) will be offering their firstborn in thanks

Hi Turlock, That sounds like a great idea and I am sure if moderated well can be a very handy Database. Especially if there is a Forum section where people can ask questions.

Experts Exchange is a geat site but I resent the fact that they charge people, those days are gone I am afraid and people are just browsing for their answers. :p
