Hi, i had a smear test done 6 months ago and it showed up CIN1, ive been for my follow up smear test and received a letter today from cervical check telling me to contact my doctor for the results.

Do cervical check always give you your results by letter or do they always tell you to contact your doctor???

I just got my results by letter, didnt have to go to doc. My results were clear. Maybe its just because you had a follow up test?

Is there anyone who has had a repeat smear, got a letter to contact their GP and everything was ok??

I had a cn1 smear test result in Oct '07. Instead of waiting another 3 months for the result of a repeat I sent mine off to a private lab and had the results within a week, it cost about €30 I think. They sent a letter to my gp saying the result was clear but in their opinion since I had one irregular result I should have a colposcopy anyway.

I did have one, it was ok but a polyp was removed. The smear they took during it came back clear which I was told during my 6mth check...then the next one 6mths later came back clear, however at that visit to the hosp the doc said before they discharged me from the clinic they'd do another colposcopy just to be sure.

He said he could see on the screen some 'irregular cells that hadn't cleared up'. I was upset to hear this and asked if he could treat them then. He said ok but would be sent to my local hosp for a lletz procedure which I had. I went for the 6mth check up recently and was told the tissue they removed was clear, that the irregular cells were just inflammed for some reason. I'm a terrible worrier and dread smears, however it's easy to be calm and reasonable when it's not you going through it. I hope I haven't rambled on too much...I just wanted to let you know, in all of my check ups, the waiting room and corridors were full of women having treatment. I can't imagine all of them if they weren't treated would go on to develop cancer, it's just a precaution. Remember it takes years for cervical dysplasia to develop into cancer. Even if you hear the irregularity is persisting or has maybe gotten slightly worse, either way you'll be treated and all will be well. Try not to worry.

Hi Mona, I just got a letter saying mine was clear, I've never gotten a letter before in years of having smears. It must be a new thing. If you are still at cn1 chances are they may not tell you in a letter but would refer you to your gp. I've had cn1 which was ok at the next smear but one of my cousins has had a few irregular results. I have another cousin who had a cn1 result a few months ago and got word saying she was now at cn3 and an appointment has been made for some date in July for treatment, I don't know whether the letter was sent to her or her doctor. Try not to worry. Whatever the result is, they'll be well able to treat it. I know loads of women, who've had treatment on their cervix, it's very common.

Hi Ann, thanks for that, puts my mind at rest a little, just worried sick about it !! i read on the cervical ceck website that the smeartaker gives the patient the results but worries me with the amount of people that have been told their result is normal by post !!

Im a complete worry wart and any kind of illness freaks me out ! But thanks a mill for your words of wisdom. the onus was on me to go for the original smear, none of the doctors ever told me to get one done and to be honest i didnt ask to much abot them. An aunt of mine had to have a full hysterectomy before she was 30 due to cancer and as im 26 i thought know was the time to go for one and my letter today has me worried sick

My letter from cervical check didnt give me the result, just said that I should arrange another test in 6 months. The Well Woman centre gave me the result and it was normal (have to go back in 6 months because the previous smear had a slight abnormality). I know it's worrying waiting for results, hope it works out ok for you.

Just got a letter today telling me to contact my GP which I did - but she is away and now I have to wait until tomorrow when the nurse is working to find out the results of my smear  ! So I'm worrying so much now and don't know if i'll be able to do anything today or sleep tonight. Pretty annoyed with whole thing tho - why send the letter saying contact in first place? A phonecall would be so much better -at least I'd get to find out straightaway instead of my brain going to the 'worst case scenario' place! The last smear test I had was from the Well Woman centre, didn't hear anything from them so rang and they told me I'd get a letter if something was wrong!

Your probably fine. I've known girls who've had CIN3, had the procedure, and been fine. I've had CIN1 on and off for about 5yrs and stopped bothering to worry.
Worst case scenaria: my mum is a nurse and says if you had to get cancer, cervical would be the one to get, because it takes YEARS to develope. Jade goodie was the exception to the rule, not the norm.

There's a chance they had an inadequate sample of cells and they need to repeat it..that happens a lot. Medical personnel seem to be desensitised to peoples' feelings. Once my sister had a voicemail left on her phone on a Fri evening from her gp telling her to get in contact regarding a recent test result. My sister was frantic with worry 'cos when the doc was carrying out the smear she said her cervix was very irregular looking and a cause for worry. First thing Monday morning she rang the doc and it turned out the result was totally clear! So my sister and me spent a whole weekend frantic with worry for nothing..The doc said she didn't want to elaborate on the phone in case someone else got the message.

Got the call this morning - I have CIN2 so I have to a coloposcopy straight away. Nurse was really nice - I feel guilty about moaning about it now!

I got a CIN1 result years ago and from memory got a letter to contact GP. I needed to have a colposcopy done (not painful at all by the way) as it was my second CIN1 in a row. I got the all clear after that.

Please try and not panic OP. Getting from CIN1 to CIN3 takes years...

    Hope you are OK.

Hi i had smear done in 2007 it was cin1.Again i got my appointment for colp 2 months later it was cin3!I had the cells lasered and i still have not had a clear smear since!ive just had my second child and am waiting the results of my latest smear and yes im panicking. So i doesnt take years to get from cin1 to cin3!!!!!!

Going in for my 3 mth repeat this morning. Bit anxious now. Is there any way that they wouldn't tell you first time round that it was CIN1, like covering it up with "result was unclear"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,264 ✭✭✭mood

OP instead of worrying just ring you doctor for the results. t could be nothing. Why wait.

You're right, it doesn't. It can take as little as six months. That's why they monitor you so closely once you have an irregular smear.

She couldn't have been nicer - same nurse again. I asked her about the results from last time - when they say "wasn't a clear result" - it means that TTOTM is too close for the test and affects the result.

Anyway - all done again - now the 6 week wait for results again.... :)

cin1 - is minor changes in the cells in your cervix; mainly these are young cells however they usually just book you in for a follow up smear; usually if you get 3 clear smears you have to go back in year; however if the changes appear again or change grade then you will be called for a colcoscopy; after this the results are examined and if they are deemed to be ok then its back to smears and if not then the letz proceedure. hope this helps

I had an irregular smear in August 2009. I returned last November (very late I know). I got another irregular smear result and I have been referred to Tallaght for a Colposcopy. All the information was sent by post and I never rang the Well Woman Centre to find out what they meant by irregular. I just assumed I just had to turn up to Colposcopy. I've been dreading it all, and reading about all the worse case scenarios on the Internet. D-Day is tomorrow and can't wait at this stage to get in there and find out for once and for all!

I've been feeling incredibly guilty that I didn't go back sooner for the 2nd smear and I've also been stressing myself out with guilt for all the times I had unprotected sex (twice in six years). The guilt of everything is making me feel awful. I can't stop crying. Its worse than the worry!

Has anyone else ever felt like this?

I am so glad I can go and get it done tomorrow and just put everything in perspective. Fingers crossed I get the all clear and if not it can be dealt with.

Its great to here that there have been others there before me.

I'll check in tomorrow evening and let you all know how I got on ...

This has nothing to do with anything. I've never had it and I still have irregular smears. Couldn't have been more careful or more choosy. It's just one of those things. So don't feel guilty. It's bad luck, that's all it is. Same as getting glandular fever from kissing someone - the small risk is always there but most people are grand. You need to live your life, you've done nothing wrong. You're doing the right thing by following up and attending your appointments. I wish you the best of luck!

Ive had abnormal cells for every smear Ive gone for (7 times) I got booked in for treatment even though Im only CIN1 only because its better to be safe then sorry,

I havent worried about my smear results even though Ive never had a normal smear. Its been monitored and if any changes happen they spot them straight away I have been going for smears since 17, am now 22, and its hasnt progressed any further. I am currently pregnant and have to wait till I have my baby before I can have treatment. Its not unusual to still have abnormal smears after treatment aswell if there was any concern they would have brought you back in sooner,

A bit of a fact for you its actually oral sex that can activate the virus that causes the infection, not just unprotected sex and boys can get it too from the likes of throat cancer,

If left untreated it can progress quite quickly but there would be certain signs such as period been alot heavier, blood clots, high amounts of discharge, etc,

    Hi back from colposcopy.

    It took five minutes.
    I barely felt a thing.
I found it far less invasive than smear.
    Nurses were absolutely gorgeous.
Result - still some minor abnormalities. CIN 1 stage. Nothing to worry about because it's being monitored. I'll have to go back in 9 months for a smear.

Thank you for your messages this morning girls, they were really reassuring as I went in.

Well done to all the brave women out there going through smears etc

As for me. I'm so glad I went through all of that to find out I'm ok. And if anything happens it's treateable!

For anyone reading this who has yet to go - go... They can only reassure you and catch a preventeable disease.

Just one piece of advice from someone who has been going through smears, colcoscopys & letz proceedures for 11 years now; please dont leave it 9 mths for your next smear. I know there prob only young cells but its better to be safe. I've only ever had 3 clear smears in a row once and they told me not to get another smear for 2 years! I went back for 1 within 6 months and same again borderline between cin1 & 2; so had the letz procedure done in 09 had; 2 more smears last year same results on 1st one waiting for results on 2nd one; not meaning to terrify you but just as I said better to be safe.

Weird timing - I just happened upon this thread last night and then today my doctor rings me to tell me that my smear came back with abnormal cells - CIN1 - and I have to go back to him in April for another smear. From reading this thread, and hearing similar stories from my friends, I take it it's common enough - and yet I actually feel quite nervous about it. When my doctor rang, I was in work and quite startled to get the call so I didn't really get a chance to talk to him. I don't mean to sound overly dramatic but I'm a teeny tiny bit freaked out, and kind of wish it was April already so I can get checked again.

Am I being silly to be so nervous about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

    Hi nervous nacy

No. You are not being silly at all!
I was so scared until yesterday too!!!

Two things to tell you that the nurse told me yesterday.....

CIN 1 is a good and early diagnosis. It is the very first stage of abnormalities. You've had your smear detecting that and now you're being monitored so you will be ok.

Most CIN 1 returns to normal by itself but if it does change they'll be able to detect that by April. The nurse yesterday told me that it generally takes about 20 years to develop into cancer from CIN 1!!! So plenty of time to sort it out if you are getting regular smears.

Well done to you for getting your smear in the first place.....its scary but you've probably prevented something far worse from happening already by facing the music. Sorry that you had to get that phonecall today but if the results were anything to worry about they would not say...'dont come back untill April!

Good luck in April. But you'll be fine. The cells wont change that quickly to make it anything to worry about by then but just know that you are working on prevention as opposed to cure by doing what you're doing.

Sorry that it took me so long, but I just wanted to say thank you so much for the positive message. I've mentioned it to a few friends but none have had any results like that so I just needed someone to put me at ease for a bit. Glad I went because I had put it off for aaaages so hopefully this is a positive thing now. Hopefully will be back on this thread with good news like the rest of us x
