well a posted cv could be on the desk for whole day or even days - more chance of it being reviewed again.

an email would get pushed further down the list as day goes by so less likely to be reopened unless they went looking for it again.

For a dead on match and the job is what you would die for I'd do both. Email at the first instance and post later on in the week when everything is done. Make sure you always have plenty of stamps, envelopes, paper and printer ink ready at all times for fast response to job adverts.
For jobs with a less likelihood of a close match email only might be best depending on the amount of adverts replied to. A quick phone call to fine tune requirements for qualifications experience and notice required usually is best if doubts exist.
In my case I was successful on two occasions with email and 'phone call recommendations from people I knew and was doing courses with.

It's been awhile since I posted cv's but last year my first 12 cv's for a job i wanted were posted. Less than half replied in writing. I've since then been emailing. Maybe emailing is just handier.

The otherside of it is that posting costs money and paper, both wasted by the likely hood of your cv being binned.
