Car insurance question

    Hi all,

I have got a 10 year old car worth about €2,000. I practically never keep anything of value in it. My comprehensive insurance is up for renewal soon and I'm wondering what type of insurance should I go for in the next year? In my case, is comprehensive too much?

    Thanks for any advice :)

Best thing to do is find out how much of a difference TPFT is compared to comprehensive. On my mini its only €20 more for comprehensive.

It depends on the difference in price between the cheapest quotes you get for TPF&T and comp.

I was always an advocate for TP T&T only as I dont drive cars worth claiming insurance on. But my mind changed last year when a friend of mine was in a collision with an uninsured driver who was completely at fault.

He has now worked up a huge bill for medical expenses and new car none of which he has got a penny for yet. He has a claim with the insurance fund whatever its called but that is taking ages. The uninsured driver has opted not to communicate with him and its going to take years to get compensation. he will also have nerve damage for the rest of his life.
If he had Comprehensive insurance cover i believe these costs would be paid by his insurance company.

Also there are other benefits to fully Comp - Breakdown assist, I used it once already when i ran out of petrol oops!
    windscreen cover - etc.

the difference in cost of cover was minimal.

The only difference with comp is that your friend would have had their car paid for, i'm afraid.

    Indeed you are correct
just had a look at my policy Doc
    5. Medical Expenses
The Insurer will reimburse to the Insured the cost of medical treatment to the Insured or to
any occupant of the Insured Vehicle in connection with any bodily injury caused by violent
accidental external and visible means in direct connection with the Insured Vehicle.
The liability of the Insurer under this Benefit is limited to €200 in respect of any one person injured.

he would have got €200 MAX

This only applies if your claiming off your own policy . In the case of the uninured driver he would just claim against the MIBI as opposed to an insurance company.
