    Hi

I'm a newbie and am looking at getting a hybrid, mainly for road use and the occassional non muddy tracks.

I've been offered these 2 bikes for the same price, and am not sure of the differences between the two. I'll be purchasing online, which will be cheaper by €150 from my LBS.

Can anyone enlighten me on the differences? Which one should I go for? I would also welcome recommendations for other bikes too.

    cheers

The "FS" stands for Front Suspension- I would suggest getting the version without it. Having said that the CRS is a nice, solid bike. The 3.0 has slightly better components, more gears (24 vs 21) and most importantly, if you are getting a suspension fork, lock out on the fork. This basically lets you reduce the amount of suspension (generally not 100%, there is still a bit left after you lock out) for road use and is invaluable, otherwise you will be bobbing along on the road.

for 'leisure' / occassional use will the 28 speed have a useable advantage over the 21 speed?

unfortunately they're out of the CRS 3.0 (28sp) in my frame size for now. they do have a 4.0 (21sp) in stock

should i just get the 4.0 or should i wait for the 3.0 to be in stock?

    thanks

If you must get a bike with front suspension for road use (which is in itself a bad idea) I would absolutely wait for the model that has lockout on the fork (the 3.0.) This is much more important than the number of gears.

How does a bike have 28 speeds?

Is that some kind of tandem in the pic? It looks like there's a chain on each side. Or am I seeing a bit of a second bike in the foreground?

It is a tandem, the other side is the timing chain. As far as I can gather you can get this fourth chainring attachment that adds on to a triple to give you an ultra-low gear. Not exclusive to tandems but of particular application there. Note the improvised chain watcher in the pic made from a light attachment! This stops the chain from falling into the BB.
