It may be a stupid question as there are so many circumstantial issues that can change the figure but does anyone have any idea of a ballpark figure for 5 weeks in the USA?

I am trying to decide how much to bring with me in dollars but I really don't know how much I will need.

I am going from Boston - New York - Washington - Raleigh in North Carolina - Atlanta - New Orleans - Houston.

Staying in hostels all of the way really and will need to eat out most, if not all of the time, I suppose.

Any hints on even helping me to arrive at a figure would be great.

Also, do people recommend cash, using ATMs or using credit cards?

I did 3 weeks in USA (well... NY, LA, San Diego, San Fran, Tijuana (Mexico) and Montreal (Canada))

was one of those - you'll only do this once holidays ...so I didnt watch my money and spent 10-12K (still paying it off 2yrs later...and a couple more years to pay it off)

Anyway.... my point is - you can do it on the cheap and spend maybe $70-100 a week on food, I would estimate approx €500-€700 a week including hostels.

Best of luck with it and enjoy .... maybe you should consider couch surfing while there.

Wow 10 - 12k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that must have been some holiday!!!

As you say, it is kinda once in a lifetime so it has to be done really.

Thanks for your tips too, it's hostels all the way for the two of us going and I suppose we should consider eating in the hostel now and then too (as in, cook our own food).

I went last summer for 3 months and spent 10k usd. The only place I travelled was San Fran for 1 week. I had an unbelievable time though and went to loads of gigs, bought plenty of clothes and went out almost every single night. So you can see where the 10k went. Anyway I have friends who were with me who spent less than half what I spent.

I think I had a little bit more of an extravagant lifestyle while there but they more or less did the same things and had the same fun I did. They brought out naggins to clubs, eat in, went to factory outlets to buy clothes instead of high street etc. Anyway my point is you don't need to have loads of money. You can live quite cheap if you are wise with your dollars. Pitty I was such a degenerate lol.
    GL with ur travels.
