Could anyone recommend a remote control model aeroplane for a twelve year old beginner who has expressed an interest in having one?

They had a basic one from Argos last year but ended up taking it back so they're looking for a better quality one but not too expensive.

Have a look on the Hobby City website, its a famous web site, very cheap and good quality equipments.I bought a few airplanes there, just for fun, because im more into helicopters.Airplanes just for fun. With 200 dollars you can build a electric airplane more radio and all the equipments.

All you need with this airplane is 3s Lipo + Tx and RX.You can buy on hobbycity as well for 40 dollars the Tx and Rx,lipo for 15 dollars, very cheap and a charger.Just to learn to fly its ok.There are another models as well, you just need to choose.

I have that plane and it's a bit beyond a trainer, super quick!
    look at instead :

this is much easier to manage for a newbie, make sure you get a 2.4g radio set, (mode 2).

If you want to spend a bit more, look at the multiplex mentor, lovely stable flyer, more like the traditional trainer.

Read up about lipos before you charge them, they can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. Buy two or three batteries if you can afford it,( charge one, while flying)

or if your handy with tools, you can build your own:

Stay away from the argos stuff, go along to your nearest club for the best advice.

    Hi,

Best advice ever given above! :)
Check out your nearest club, and visit them, have a chat with the instructors, members, see what is around and make your own opinion of this great hobby!

As for a model, if you want to stay into foamies (foam models), Mentor or Easycub are a good choice, and to stay in the Multiplex stuff, the ultimate beginner model would be the Easystar.
You have a Ready to fly, with radio etc etc in the package for about 200 euros. Check out other forums about this model ( ie http://www.rcgroups.com and search for easystar )

Now, that depend what you are looking for exactly : IC power, electric, durable etc etc... But visiting a club would be my best bet for a start :)
