8 year break from running

    Hello all,
Re-starting running after 8 year break, did marathon in 2001. I am 37 now and deciced to start running again a couple of months ago. My longest run this year is 10km in about 53mins(and that was pushing it and pacing not good)
Have not run in the past two weeks due to headcold/cough etc. I am thinking of marathon again but maybe this could be over reaching? I am going to give the club thing a go as I have never taken that option before and I think it will keep the motivaton going. It also seems much harder now to get fit, due to being 8 years older! and also dont have the same confidence which I think is hindering me.
Your thoughts on this, what sort of distance would be best?

Best of luck man - main thing I notice as I get older is that fitness takes a lot longer to arrive so you'll need to be incredibly patient. Also injury is much more likely so follow common sense advice to help avoid injury - run on grass, be very gradual about upping mileage, etc. Eventually the fitness will come. If I were you I would leave the marathon until next year and focus on the short stuff for now.

    Hi there,
I was in a simalar boat to yourself, I didnt run for over 10 years and started back last January. Good advise from Mrak there in regards to training, don't do too much too soon, try and get out ofter for small amounts and bulid up.
A marathon would be possible but you would prob get more benifit of doing a marathon next year.

    Best of luck

Thanks for that lads, I will take your advice. Im thinking I should concentrate on enjoying my training rather than putting pressure on myself too soon at this stage
