ok guy here, currently having doubt about my 1st choice COMMERCE 4 this year, i'm a repeat first year ,did science in Nuig 4 2008/2009 but dropped out, 18 since april.400 points in CAO 2008

I know what the course entails(accounting, economics, marketing but i'm concerned, my parents are adamant i pick a "sensible":o course coz my choice this time its a do or die situation 4 me, can't screw up, they're not
earning huge sums 2 say the least!

but i'm more inclined 2 pick somethin like multimedia communications(true passion):D,i've just this horrible image(no offence intended) of a accountant stuck in a office 4 45 + years or a some typical bitchy over ambitious business type peddling some PR bull****:o any truth in that? also is this a business rather accounting orientated course? is HL maths a big help 4 this course? got A2 in ordinary!

now my question to any graduates of this course is what are you doing NOW(further study career etc....) wat post grad course will this open e.g journalism and what are the current prospects 4 jobseekers of commerce for forthcoming decade
banking and finance are hardly appealing career choices to LC students at the mo?
given the current economic climate(the big four are laying offalso)
is there a need or demand for 280 odd graduates every year from this course?

i need some opinions, advice, much appreciated:)
    and a massive discussion!:D

cos i'm stressed and worried at the moment

Commerce is a good choice, I graduated in 1999. Went on to do a post grad in IT and have been working in IT since then. My friends from Commerce are now working in all types of areas - accountancy, IT, marketing, teaching, Law, HR, banking.

The thing with Commerce is you get a good business background which is important no matter what area you eventually end up working in.

From Commerce you can specialise in any area of business - marketing, finance, HR, IT, Law etc.

However, there is a lot to be said for following what you are passionate about, if that is multimedia communications then you should think about doing it. Maybe do Commerce as a good solid base degree and then do a postgrad of some sort in multimedia communications?

Commerce will stand to you. Also, I got an A2 ordinary in Maths also and didnt struggle in Commerce with that.

Dont be overly worried about earnings at this stage, it is up to you to make a career for yourself and the earning will follow. You won't magically earn 100k per year in any career without being smart, working hard, learning all the time etc etc.

My opinion is that IT will always be a good area to get into. The skills you learn in there can be applied to any type of company and you can always work for yourself if you wish. IT people with a good business background are valuable.

Not at all! The majority of Commerce students, in recent years anyways, do stream in accounting but not everyone does. Out of my own group of commerce buddies I know a lot of people who did HR, Marketing, Economics....and besides that the people who do choose to do accounting do not see it as a life sentence as such! A lot of CEO's, MD's, entrepreneurs etc would have Accounting as their major as it is a good foundation for running a business. From my own experiences, even though my Accounting results were quite good I found it to be an absolutely soul-destroying subject! Thankfully there are other options.

I'd say maybe 70% of the people I knew in Commerce went on to do postgrads, many at NUIG. The general consensus seemed to be that a B.Comm is just a B.Comm, and as you mentioned with hundreds of graduates, there is most definitely the incentive to do a masters, specialize in something, and set yourself apart from the crowd. It's especially important to do so in the current climate.

In terms of job prospects - graduate programmes are definitely thinning out, and many employers are looking for experience. On the other hand, graduate labour is cheap! So there are still some opportunities out there if you look hard enough. In any case, by the time you graduate, should you choose to do Commerce, the economy will have recovered (if not be on the road to recovery!) .....hopefully! :p

Apart from the obvious places like the UK, Australia and New Zealand my class mates ended up all over the place - France, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, Italy, Bahamas, Panama, USA, Malaysia.

Most are back in Ireland now with mortgages etc

Edit: Some went directly straight after graduating, some went teaching English, some went after getting some experience here and some were transferred through their job.

Pick it. Seriously if that's what you want to do, then do it.
