    Hey All,

A well known agency is asking for passport details to be mailed through to them along with references whilst applying for any job through their ads on jobs.ie, very strange indeed?????

They want to make sure the person is actually allowed to work in Ireland before they start to check the CV would be my guess.

The circumstances described in the other thread are indeed dodgy. Website contains no mail address, email, company name, employment business accreditation, etc, etc.

However, on occasion confirmation of your identity is required when applying for certain jobs. This may be for security purposes when applying for roles in financial services organisations, etc. Alternatively, it may, as a previous poster said, for the agency to confirm that the applicant can legally work in the country.

OP - Before you pass on any personal data you need to ensure that the organisation is bona fide. Do you have their mail & email addresses? Phone & fax numbers? Do they have accreditation as an employment business? Etc, etc, etc. If you are in any way unsure - don't deal with them.

Sorry All - the agency in question is a well known employment agency based mainly in Dublin(think they have 4 different arms), just found it strange on their ads that they were looking for passport details etc before even acknowledging an application?

Wouldn't care if they're well known or not, it sounds well dodgy to me to be given your passport details out like that. Maybe if you were offered a job and needed proof of visa status by the company offering the job, even so they'd be able to tell by your PPS, I would think?

Definitely wouldn't be sending my passport details to an agency if I was you, they more than likely have your name/address from signing up with them already, sounds like your leaving yourself wide open to identity theft by supplying it IMO.

    Johnny:

Ask them why they want it. If you are satisfied with the response - give it to them. If not, then don't. Simple as that.

When I worked in the UK it was normal but generally it took the form of actually bringing in your passport so they could see it, telephone them and ask them can you do this instead maybe?
