    Hi all,

I looked at a second hand CZ 550 in .243 today. A slightly battered stock it has to be said, asking price is €850 for gun and 3-9x50 Bushnell scope. How would that sound to ye? Jump at it or look around?

P.S. I'm sure i'd get it for €800 with a bit of effort and a ball of cash.

    Thanks
    Bob

How much are they and the scope new?

    Does it come threaded?
    With a case?
    Bi-pod?
    extra magazines?
    Any free rounds?
    Cleaning kit?

Not sure if its threaded. Dealer is to get back to me tomorrow with price on new gun, but the second hand one is gun scope and sling only. It seemed a bit much to me given the poor condition of the stock. I kinda got the impression its had alot of use or wasn't looked after or both. Just interested to see what ye might think of it given that its the first one I've looked at.

Now I could be WAY off but I thought those guns were about 600 new and a bushnell scope would not be too much more than 300 quid, add say 100 for mounts and you're at about a grand.

Second hand and in obvious worn condition (based on a new price of 1000 euro) I'd offer 600 if it were me (60% of new price)

Seems a bit steep to me but as I say I am not sure of the new price of one of those rifles.

Cheers Vegeta. I'll look around a bit, I might be able get something in better nick for a little less money.

I sold a CZ 550 with bushnel scope a few years back in .22/250, sold it through a dealer for 550 plus his cut, id say the price is well high as my one was mint with about a 1000 rounds through give or take a couple hundred. For that price you could almost get a .308 with a cheaper scope new, remember .308 ammo is a lot cheaper than .243, was one of the reasons I changed from .22/250, that and the extra range. Id say keep looking and consider other similar sized calibers as the ammo can be a large cost down the road.

Also worth noting if it looks a bit abused or as if it's had a lot of use is the .243 is not the gentlest round on barrels, so if you can get a good examination of the bore, that'll tell you a lot. No point buying a rifle only to have to rebarrel it before it'll shoot.

Good point hk. I'll look into the .308. I'm not set on a .243 only, just want something that I'll get a few years enjoyment out of.

Tbh I didn't examine it too much, I knew when I saw the state of the stock it had hardship and i'd probably steer clear of it. I'm just tryin to get an idea of prices before i commit to any gun.

i would not touch it at that price ,on a straight buy.

its a cheep gun and scope to start with ,if the last owner did not look after the stock chances he did not look after the barrel .

    much better to keep shopping

Cheers JW. Whats your take on .243 V's .308 (price of rounds aside)? I'd be hoping to get into deer stalking in the future and dont want to find myself looking to change soon after buying.

a 243 is not a good cal for a lad starting out ,as it will get you into trouble more than get you out of it.

the 308 is a fine round ,i would not be bothered with it myself .

the 25,06 is a good fox/deer cal..as is the 270 especially now with the 110gr v max available also you can get 100gr for it .

if you have little interest in foxing go for the .270 no fuss cal just does the job.

the 270 is not as fashionable as some of the new cals but it will be there long after there gathering dust on a shelf some where.

also there is some very good deals on them knocking about.

I'm not shooting all that long (almost a year) Have a .22wmr at the moment. My plan is to keep that for a spot of rabbit shooting and do a bit of foxing and deer stalking (under the instruction of a my uncle who is a seasoned hunter) with something bigger. I understand what you mean by a .243 getting a greenhorn into trouble, so would you recommend a .223 for foxing for a couple of years and working up through calibers that way?

Cheers fish slapped. Defiantly worth looking at. Much better deal than that second hand CZ. Are they the boyos in Dublin?

They are trade only but if you ring them they'll put you in touch with a dealer that is doing this offer or if the dealers wont Millards will sort you out themselves.

there is little point in doing this .the reason i would recommend the 25,06 or 270 to a lad starting out is they are flat shooting and hard hitting .

Everyday is a school day:D Thanks for the input JW. I'll be sure to look into those two.

JW; Might be a stupid question but what does the -06 stand for in .25-06? I was just reading up the thread on .25-06 for deer/fox and its sounding more like the way to go (plus the pic of yours looks absolutely amazing)

it was based on the 30-06, which was the 30 calibre cartridge adopted by the US military in 1906

Thanks Jonty. Like I said, everyday is a school day!!:D
