    Hi guys,

Is it possible to sign a non-student into the gym?
I'm a current student and want to bring a friend up to the gym with me.

    Thanks

No, they only allow entrance to members and only staff, students and graduates can become members.

That is unless they've changed policy and not updated.

I did also hear once of a possible summer membership as the gym is fairly empty during the summer, you'd have to ask or email them to find out though, there is an email in the link.

Ok, that's what I thought but wasn't sure.
    Thanks for the quick response.

They're allowing non-members to pay per visit at the door now, aren't they?

You can bring a guest apparently.
    http://www.tcd.ie/Sport/index.php?nodeId=215&title=Members_Area
No time restrictions for guest - Guests can now use the Centre at any time during the college term You can bring a guest along to help motivate you in the Fitness Theatre or perhaps go for a climb together on our challenging Climbing Wall. Guest fee applies.
Although something which is a little odd is the fact that it says you can bring them during the college term. I'd imagine it's the same during the summer tho.

I can only imagine its terribly expensive. I remember looking into bringing a guest to squash, and it was 20 euro.

I'm going there latter, I'll ask. Never knew you could bring in guests. Another way might be to borrow a friends student card, someone who's maybe gone travelling for the summer.... I don't think the staff actively check face-person resemblance when you enter.

So is this still open for the summer then? Is it busy?

I haven't actually ventured into the gym yet! Shameful

I was there this morning along with about 10 others. In the evening there is a few more there but not a lot more

I'm going to Trinity this year and I plan to use the gym a lot. What are the busiest and least busy times to go?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Depends on what you want to do.

I would avoid it between lunch and after work/college (after 5 to about 7).

The morning can be busy with the rugby teams training

To be fair the rugby players keep very much to themselves. Most of their training (except weights) are done elsewhere and they don't hog the machines.

Seven in the morning is perfect as after a workout your also guaranteed a free lane in the pool for a quick swim.

When they do weights they certainly hog the equipment. The last time I was there they had both squat racks in use while the coach gave them a prep talk. They take all the equipment they will need to use right at the start of the session so no one else can take it. Not to mention they leave all the weights lying around when they are done.

Thats my expereince as well but I just ask them to move on if they are chatting about last nights reach around or what ever. Most of them are grand and have no problem sharing

The problem here is the sub-standard facilities Trinity has for athletes in the pursuit of excellence. The rugby teams, nor any other sports teams, should not have to hog the gym that the regular students use when they want to train/work out together. We all know how crap the gym is, just thought I'd say it again. Great for the average user but substandard for some of the sports clubs. It's ridiculous how above par our sports teams are in comparison to the universities which have great facilities (UCD/UL)...

Substandard suggest that most other universities have far superior facilities, I haven't noticed that to be the case.

Have you ever been to Santry? That sentence needs no explaining if you ever have. The rugby pitch in February is unusable. Only the rugby club have use of that pitch which shouldn't be the case (plans to turn it into an all weather pitch were shelved a few months ago, now its just being resurfaced with lights put in as well, again only the rugby club will have use). The use of the cricket pitch is at the whim of the weather and groundsmen etc... UL's facilities are used by Munster regularly, UCD's by Leinster and Ireland, Trinity's are not! Any club that has to train in Santry I really feel for, hockey club especially! The Pav dressing rooms are not up to scratch, compared to the AIL teams who come to play the rugby club in College Park they're shambolic, unlike UCD's which you could play a rugby game in they're that big. Gym is not big enough etc... the list could go on.

The problem is that there's little forsight in DUCAC unless they're pushed, and then they claim it was their idea all along. The new SU President got votes from a lot of sports teams on the premise of facilities being crap and that it was one of his priorities... maybe a load of political bull to get in to power but I think it hit home with some disgruntled sports captains.

It must be said, just because sports players are on a team doesn't change the fact that they are paying members of the gym, just like any other students. Coming together with their team is not very different to going to the gym with a friend. It's a bit unfair to claim that they are "hogging" equipment, they have just as much right to use it as anyone else.

The French trained their this year

I've played many games in College Park during good weather and bad in and out of Cricket season

I've played in some of the best and worst grounds in Ireland. Some have great changing rooms crap pitches and vice versa. Changing rooms dont really have much to do with how you play your game

    Gym is not big enough

Where you in college 10 years ago? There has been massive and I mean massive improvements in the gym over the last 10 years

Santry is an absolute disgrace, DUCAC is swimming in Red Tape, TMcC is a road block to anything not football and the hockey pitch is a shambles. The lines have sunk and now hockey balls are being launched up and already one person has been hit in the head as a result.

Trinity has gone seriously downhill in the sporting side of things big time!

This certainly does seem to be the mood amongst the captains, lets see if anything comes of it.

The french were supposed to train on the rugby pitch but becuase of the absolute ****e condition of the pitch they refused. They were then told incorrectly that they could play on the cricket pitch, which if I remember correctly there was uproar about.
