They're reverse threaded on the right hand side. English ones are anyway. I think italian threading is normal on both sides.

thanks Tom. got non-drive side off no prob. unlocked anti clockwise (towards front wheel).
So will that mean looking head on to drive side the cups should unlock toward back wheel ?

The right hand cup will unscrew if you turn it clockwise.

    Probably.

Is it an adjustable bottom bracket? What make of bike?

My bike has an old-style adjustable bottom bracket, and the fixed cup (drive-side cup) unscrews clockwise.

It's a 24 TPI, English (Raleigh) bottom bracket.

If it is an adjustable, this might help.

The fixed cup might be screwed in very tight, and you might need his improvised tool there to get sufficient purchase to turn it.

Its the ultegra cup style. Am getting tiny movements on it but my arms are starting to hurt.

Something I find help if they're a bit stuck is to use your rear wheel qr skewer to hold the removal tool in place against the splines (not 100% sure with Shimano, but with the tool I have, there's a hole through the middle where you can slide the skewer). That way you can put all your energy in the right direction rather than also having push from the side to keep the tool locked into the splines. Helps prevent damaged and chipped splines too.

For any tips on bike maintenance go to the Park Tool Website. They have lots of how-to's which include photos at times.

Bailed me out more than once (saved my bacon whilst pretending to be a bike mechanic on the RAS!)

Left hand thread on English BB drive side, lots of leverage required. Use a long spanner (I used a 2 foot adjustable) or fix BB removal tool in a vice and turn bike. Failing that take it to a bike shop. I was amazed at just how much force was required to loosen it half a turn, after that it was easy.

brought to LBS. was starting to inflict more damage to the cup. He reckoned I was trying to turn it the wrong way.:o
God Bless LBS......as well as online retailers

At least it's now out, next time you want to remove it you'll remember or more likely scratch the head and wonder....which way?

It is screwed in so that when you pedal you are effectivley tightening the BB. The same applies to your pedals.I thought I was doing it right but how and ever...it's in the hands of someone capable now.

The best tip I have for BB's and cranks and pedals is that if you turn the wrench towards the rear of the bike, you are loosening, and towards the front tightens

Thats Incorrect, and a very loose statement as it can be applied both ways since you turn in a circle.

    The correct technique is:

With your wrench parallel with the seat tube, and with the bike upright in the stand, you turn the wrench towards the front of the bike.

incase of a inclination for a argument in favour of destroying a persons BB cup,Proof: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=94

Mea culpa, that's what I get for not looking at the bike before I type!
