Is it possible for the manual shift on an Audi A4 auto gearbox to be disabled? When I push the lever to the side to manually shift it doesn't work (it's stay's as if its still in auto). Or is it just broken??

Edit: I believe that multitronic is the correct name for it. I can't find any solution after searching on the internet.

So the car changes gear exactly as it would if in D, even when the lever is in manual mode? At a guess, might the switch that the lever actuates to put the car into manual mode be faulty?

Yes it drives the same as if it was in D. Moving the gear lever does nothing at all. The display on the dash also shows that you are in P,N,R,D ans S all at the same time which probably means its broken in some way.
