Was looking at getting a 05 VW Passat. Someone told me the parts are expensive e.g. timing belt. Is that true?
Is it a car you'd recommend?

I prefer the older model to be honest. But that's a matter of opinion. I just don't get a good quality feel from inside the cabin of the new Passat and hear a lot about reliability issues. DMF goes on diesels very easily.

The parts don't seem to be too expensive from what I've had to do (bulbs, filters, oil etc ) The wipers are very expensive. I was looking into getting a new set and it was costing over 40 euro.

    No.
Had a 99, and everything cost a bloody fortune. Timing Belt quotes anywhere between €750 and €1150!!!!!!! That was when garages had lost the plot, obviously.

Dual mass flywheel is a problem but then again its a problem in a hell of a lot of cars right now. Id have a new model passat over a 2005 avensis or mondeo. Honda Accord would be worth a look but if its parts prices you are worried about, maybe dont go for the honda. VW parts are not dear and are widely available. The one piece wipers are expensive but they are so much better than the traditional ones.
There were recalls on the 2005 passat so check they were done too. Early ones had tyre wear probs too.

+1 with the old style Passat you basically had to take the front off the car to do the timing belt so the job was simple but the labour was huge - that's changed with the new style.

Parts were always fairly reasonable, comparable with the costs of other cars of the same size.

The Wipers on the new shape are pricey but that said they do last so in the end it's worth putting the proper stuff on.

Parts arent that expensive as another poster mentioned labour is the most expensive part of getting the timing belt changed. I got it done in the main dealer (for piece of mind) and it cost 550 im in kerry btw. I service my car a 2003 Passat TDI 130bhp at home and from memory the parts for a service are roughly:

    22euro Air Filter
    12euro Pollen Filter
    10 euro Paper Oil filter

    For oil:

Longlife oil 20k miles between changes (VW 507.01) was about 75euro for 5litres

Fixed interval 10k miles (VW 505.01) was about 50euro

Had to get a parking sensor lately it was quiet expensive at 80euro for one!!! and I have to spray it to match the colour coded bumper :( And you cant get it anywhere else but the main dealer
