    Hi,
Going on a stag weekend in Kinnegad in early September, and am trying to book golf for a saturday morning. Can anyone recommend places to play that are within 20/30 minutes. Want a reasonable course (not a real scrappy public place), but don't want to be paying more than about €50 each either. Any reccomendations? I see Edenderry is an option - what's the course like? I'm aware that alot of places would be members only on Saturdays.

    thanks

    P

New Forest in Tyrellspass is nearby. Haven't played it but heard it's a good track.

There are a bunch of different courses around there.

Mullingar is one of the great inland tracks and their new greens are superb. €45 on a Saturday morning.

New Forest is very new and the quality is excellent. Again, superb greens and a big estate to give it an expansive feel. 55-70 Euro but definitely negotiable.

On the next rung down on the quality scale you have Delvin Castle which is a colourful if straightforward parkland. Not sure about Saturday availability though

Ballinlough Castle was designed by Pat Ruddy and may be destined for bigger things, but is a bit rough around the edges. But worth a visit if you like big trees and shrouded tee boxes. You'll probably get out for 20 quid, but no proper clubhouse.

Further afield are Edenderry, Highfield, Tullamore, Esker Hills, Moyvalley and one of my personal favourites - Rathcore.

    Enjoy

I have to say New Forest would be my choice in that area, Moyvalley, Rathcore and Mullingar, also Knightsbrook in Trim. cheaper courses Knockanally, Edenderry, Highfield. All depends on your direction of travel and hotel. Brackens bar is the best in town for porter.

The full new course will be open in Kilcock from August Bank Holiday Weekend.

    Green fees €35 on Saturdays.

Would be about 30 mins from Kinnegad.

Rathcore and Moyvalley would be my picks. Knightsbrook is lovely but can be expensive and it's a bit further away.

Look into the Open Fairways card if there's a few of ye going or you're playing twice in the weekend. Card can be got for ~€90 and might be paid for and save you money in a single weekend. Check the Open Fairways website for the courses you decide to play though as some exclude weekends from the discounts.
