Lowering on gas shocks??

I was just wondering, when people lower their cars they usually just buy lowering springs and fit the on a strandard shock. Now i read somwhere ages ago that it is supposed to wear shock an awfull lot quicker and eventually lead to a damage. Then going through the ads on donedeal, one of the lads says that he lowered his car 60mm, on gas shocks.
The question is, does a pair of gas shocks solve the problem since u can get the bilstein ones for about 300e delivered, sometimes with springs too.
or is the coilover set the way to go??

    thanks for input
