    I have a hire car, a 1.4 ford fusion automatic. I assume that its a petrol car but the good people at hertz never specified. All the details car manual, contract, etc are in another language so how can i be sure that's its a petrol car. Would the 1.4 TDI version have TDI written on the back?

    Note: There's a green ring on the inside of the petrol cap, i think someone told me before that that's a petrol indicator? is that right?

    I've never come across a Diesel car that didn't state Diesel inside the Fuel filler cap.

    If you are in Ireland the diesel pump shouldn't fit in to a petrol hole - I can't say for sure that's the same anywhere else though.

    I'd be pretty sure it's petrol, don't think Ford put an auto box with the 1.4Tdci engine.

    Thanks, I think its petrol too but I thought I'd ask just in case.

    :confused: I might be stating the obvious here, but why don't you simply telephone the car rental company and ask them what fuel is applicable to the vehicle on rental agreement #### ?

    Over here, petrol pump handles are green and diesel are black, so the ring might indicate that. In the US, Diesel pumps are often green, though.

    Does it have a sticker inside the fuel flap saying anything? (If it's not in English, it might say something like "sans plomb" - the French for "unleaded").

    Have you rented the car in Ireland or elsewhere?

    Listen to it! If it sounds smooth and quiet at idle it's petrol. If it sounds like a bag of nails, it's diesel! :D

    Rented in Germany and everything is in german hence the issue. It revs to about 3,500 before auto box changes gear. I'll check the sticker inside the petrol flap (not near the car now).

    Thanks.

    German:
    "Benzin" = Petrol
    Diesel is Diesel

    how high does the rev counter go to is what i mean. If its above 6k revs maybe going to 7 or 8 its a petrol. If it has a red line starting at about 4.5k and tops out at 6k its most likely the diesel as petrol engines rev higher
