I sometimes attend meetings of the University Senate. The point of honorary degrees seems to be publicity for TCD. It all seems rather cheap and pointless.

If we do give out honorary degrees, it should be limited to TCD graduates and to past or present staff and students.

Well, that is the traditional role of honorary degrees. By way of comparison, here is the list of honorary degrees awarded over the past couple of decades at another place:

Is there a list of people who've gotten one from Trinity anywhere? So long as they're not giving them out to complete muppets I don't see the problem.

Giving out honorary degrees is a standard practice for most universities as long as the person in question has some connection, however tenuous, with the institution in question.

I was going to raise it the last time I attended a meeting, but Robert Redford was being proposed and he was at my wife's old school so I was talked out of it and just abstained.
