    Hello

I am so glad I found these boards, and i hope I can get some useful advice from the people on them. I am returning to Limerick after spending 10 years in NZ. I am seperating from my husband, I have a one year old daughter.

I am going back to Limerick next week and will stay with my 7o year old mam who gets the pension and living alone allowence. I only want this to be a short stay with her as she is very contrary and prefers being on her own, also i do not want to interfere with her living alone allowence.

Really I want to become aware of what benefits I am intitled to. I will really need my own council house, does anybody out there know what I should be looking for from socail welfare and what they will be expecting from me. I would like to return to study also to rejoin the workforce, I have not been working over here for a year, prior to that I was self employed.

Any tips or your own experiences would be much appreciated as I'm sure alot has changed in 10 years

Hi TaulahGrace- you really should contact the Department of Social and Family Affairs to clarify matters with them- if you are intending to return to Ireland after a 10 year absence. Most social welfare entitlements are based on the assumption- of 'habitual residence'- having lived abroad for 10 years, you are no longer classified as 'habitually resident'.

Rules were recently changed specifically regarding the rules governing 'habitual residence' however there is an assumption that the person has been resident in the EEA in the intervening period.

Clarify your entitlements- prior to moving back.
