Hi there. Right, my background. First off, over the past 4 years I have been working full time for three of them. In 2007 I decided to go back to college as work was drying up and I could see the end coming (I was in the building ind.). I managed to keep a day a week going in my old place, and paid some amount (not alot, but some) of PRSI during this time. When I finished my course I went to look for work, but couldn't find any. A friend of mine was able to swing me 2 days a week one of countries hospitals. This I thought would be ok for a quick fix, stop me from claiming the dole and at least be doing something.

All in all I think I worked out to be getting about the same as someone on the dole. Of course, I have to pay for train fare, lunches, and put money into the kitty when people are leaving, go to various social occasions etc. This was all fine, I was keeping my head above water and thinking, ok, well at least I'm not claiming. But there a few weeks ago they really started to hammer me, and with all the recent activity in the HSE, I have had my pitiful pay cut by about 20%, and now they are cutting my hours to 7 from 8 a day.

Long story short, I can't afford to live anymore on what I earn. I have taxed all my friends with loans to the extent that I don't have many any more, and forget about the other costs such as the new car I have to get because of the dim initiative of the new NCT rules. So I tripped the light fantastic and went down to the local social welfare office to find out what I am entitled to... and according to them, I am not entitled to a cent.

That's right, not a broken button or a bit of lint from their grubby pockets. The reason, according to them, is that because I started to work on a two day a week contract, unless there is some loss of my days worked, I can't claim one cent. Even worse in fact, I can't quit either because if I do that I have to wait 7 weeks to make a claim. I mean at this stage I am earning way less than someone who isn't doing a tap, not to even mention the extra cash they are earning by not having to travel to work, but lunches etc.

My question is, can this be true. Is there nothing I can do. I got my contract out when I got home and it says my working hours will be "as required". Nothing about 2 days etc. Is there anything else I can apply for. Is my only option now to get myself fired. I would hate to do that, I enjoy the job and would be almost suicidal if I didn't have something to keep me occupied during the week.

I only took up a part-time job time job (2/3 days a week) at the start of May after 10 months on the dole. Iam employed on a part-time contract and this is not likely to change in the near future as was stated by them on my social welfare form. I claim for the days i don't work each week and have been recieving cheques in the post for the department of social and family affairs in the post for these days. I can't see how your not entitled to anything from them.

If i was you i'd go to my local citizens information office and see what you're entitled to because as far as i can see you're in the same position as myself and i'm recieving benefits!
