Drove a friends CLK200 today, and loved it . It wasn't the best example but still I love it. Will now be looking to shift my 02 IS200 . For any owners out there is there anything I should be looking out for. And what would be the best model to get ,taking note that I do not want to spend too much money maybe 4k along with my Lexus.

As high as spec as possible, preferably with leather etc., and the auto if possible. The 2.0 Clk has plenty of power, lovely car to drive. If you want more power, go for a bigger engine.

Buy a nice colour as well;)

What year were you driving? The new model came out in 02, the old in '98 IIRC.

It was an 03 new model. Prefer the newer shape.

    I don't think you'll get a 03 with 4k and a 02 Is 200?

Anyone know when the new CLK is due to be launched here?

Definately the most desireable one to go for is one with leather and an auto box.

I'd say the new model is due any time now, the CLK is based on the E Class afaik and the new model usually follows soon after the new E Class saloon is launched.

Isn't the CLK being scrapped and replaced with an E class coupe?

Your probably right. Makes sense as I think alot of people confused the old model as being a coupe version of the smaller C Class.

....make sure u get the kompressor one tho!!! other ones are not wrth it, also rust and probably stay with manual, if any of the electronics fails, autobox will go daft and wnt let u drive....

I was always under the impression that MB made better autos than manuals.

it is true baz, but just to be on a safe side, id go for manual, often little electrical gremlin can cause auto box to be stuck in neutral, i have a manual w210 komp and i dont think its dat bad, although not as tight as in passat 02,
many owners say dat popular bas/abs/esp fault freezzes the autobox

Explains why I could only find the old CLK convertible on the german webste! :o

E class coupe now available in Germany so I guess it should be launched here within the next few months....

I can't think of a better way to ruin a CLK than by giving it a four cylinder engine and manual transmission. I'd sooner spend less on an older, well-specified 320 auto and keep the savings for fuel.

Ya the 2.0 Kompressor is a good engine!, pretty fast in a 06 e200 150mph or so!

Auto is the best job in that kinda car with that engine! with the triptronic

Yeah it has to be an auto in the CLK. You'd never sell a manual one when every buyer wants an auto in this class.

yeah but ur not buying the car so ur just saying that, u havent a notion how much could sorting out the auto box be at mb dealer, it would be a fortune, if new powertsteering pump costs 650e i can imagaine that box would set around few thousand, half the value of the car, when i was buying my merc i wanted to get a manual for less complications, remember that mercs 95 onwards aren't as good as they used to be, there was plenty of electrical gremlins with them, if i was buying old w124 or w140 id go for auto anytime, but not in the new mercs....too much trouble

don't buy a manual, it's nuts. The car is way better suited to auto boxes which are x1000 times more comfortable drive, and if the service history is present, it should be fine.

the 4-pots are okay, but underpowered; V6 or V8 is the way to go. For the love of god don't buy a manual, unless you want a painful experience; MB manuals suck, MBs autos on V6s are smooth as silk and ultra-reliable.

Also, electrical "gremlins" is simply made up. Don't but on paranoia or suggestibility, buy on service and repair history. If the only thing taht has been done is servicing, chances are it's fine. If it's the 1 in 100 cars that was in and out fo the shop more frequently, then avoid it, but those are rare; most are fine.

    I got myself a clk200 00". Manual non-compressor. Have it for a year now.

I love it, and honestly i like this older model more then newer one. It looks more spaciuos inside, dash looks alot nicer. And outside its more bulky and more mercedes looking. But thats the matter of taste.

Only regret i am having with it, that its not an compressor. I had to take non-compressor one becouse of insurance. I was 22 with 1 ncb and got insurance for it for 1.2keu ( plus mine gf as named driver) !!!

Now about experience... Make sure you have a good mechanic, who knows what is he doing. Had some bad experience with mine old one... He did not even had a clue about mercs.. :( costed me alot... ( fixing his mistakes... )

    When you buy:

    1. Make sure cat is in good condition, replacing one will cost you 1.4k eu. ( only main dealer, couldnt get a third party one anywhere in IRL or UK)
    2. Air flow meter, weak spot for mercs, costs about 480eu ( dealer only)
    3. Rust.Rust.Rust...
    4. they say elctrics very dodgy... but i had mine one for a year, newer had any trouble...

Alltogether its a nice car m8. If you look after it, it will be reliable as hell it self m8.

It is, its already been launched. As many pictures as you could want here. The CLK the OP is interested in was actually based on the C class of the time but it was kind of marketed as the coupe version of the E class.

You do realise that Merc dont actually make auto boxes themselves?

Its nonsense really, its auto or nothing. There are a vast amount of things that can go wrong on a car, why focus on an auto box?

Maybe you should get rid of your manual Merc and get a bicycle - less to go wrong you know :P

Same as the new E class coupé, then, which is actually based on the C class saloon, not the E class.
