Answered a job advert last week. Decent salary conditions etc Interview tentatively arranged for Dublin this week but got a call to go to Italy to visit factory and meet staff etc.
Question is should my prospective employer send me the €400-00 fare and hotel charge ?
As they haven't had a screening interview should they be asking me to attend in Italy at this stage ?

Any contact was via a e-mailed Cv and a telephone conversation
Dosent seem right that i should go there at this stage --maybe i am being picky ?

Their website seems kosher but when it comes to me spending money prior to first meet --it dosent seem right

    Comments please ( constructive )

In my experience, I never received any refund from any company when I had to go there for an interview (or something related). Now, if the expense is significative, I always clarify this in advance, as I don't like to spend my money for nothing. Some company refuse to refund it, some accept, but it saves me a lot of time and money.

Also, at the risk of starting a flame, the above is especially valid for Italian companies (I'm from there myself and I dealt with many of them personally, often with unpleasant surprises).

My trip when i started this job about 10 months ago, was arranged though emails, and about 10 different telephone conversations and i was on a plane to the HQ of the company which is about 11 hours away, and i didnt know anyone, didnt meet anyone, i was picked up from the airport by a limo driver and taken to the hotel and then the next day i met with the employer. so its not that unusual. BUt the plan tickets were paid, rental car was paid, hotel was paid, expenses paid.
