    hi guys,

im looking to buy a XC Hardtail in the price region of 300-500euro.

from reading posts on forums etc i just get bemused about the mount of info there is regarding what is the best bike of this type to buy.

i have been looking at the lapierre range, the specialized hardrock sport disc and some of the giant bikes.can anyone steer me in the right direction as whats best in their opinion.

the thread on what bike shops in ireland to go to cracks me up, i think its a matter of experience and what suits different people in regards to each shop, one guy says its crap the other says its A1.confusing!!

    thks everyone,

    thks everyone,

As regards to a bike shopyou should shop around yourself, as Its best to built up your own opinion, than going into a shop either expecting it to be great and its not or going into a shop with a chip on your shoulder because of what you read here.

300-500 will get low a Low midrange XC MTB.

    Id be Expecting:

    A Aluminium Frame 7005 grade.
24 Gears, either sram or shimano, rapidfire.
    Hydraulic Brakes
A decent set of cranks, not suntour id be looking at truvativ or shimano deore at least.
Suspention wise it can be hit and miss, Id strongley advize you to stay clear of RST and most of the Suntour range(EPICON is good though), This leaves you with either rock shox or marzocchi. You will get more features on a rockshox fork at this range than marzocchi. Id stick with rock shox.

Wheels you wont get anything too spectacular, maybe shimano 575 hubs on alexrims. Personally Id avoid noname rims unless you have experience wih bikes.

Id try get a late model kona you should pick one up in cyclogical or in halfords cheap. Ive seen cindercones, blasts and firemountains all sub 600 in the past 2 months.

I have a chute from about 2004 or so. The Konas are sweet. I'd recommend em.

I just had a bike delivered from Paulscycles in England and I am delighted with it. Ordered it on Thursday and it arrived this morning. Absolute bargain, I'd never buy in Ireland again.

All I had to do was pop on the front wheel, pedals, seatpost and handlebars. Everything else was assembled.

It cost me €700 including delivery. Here it would have cost €1000+

Check out their website you'd be mad not to. - http://www.paulscycles.co.uk

Can we not do this in threads started by first time posters? It shames us all.

    edit:
why are you thanking me kona? I'm telling you to be quiet and go away.

    edit 2:
do thanks disappear when a post is edited? good to know.

    thks everyone,

You'll find some great advice on this thread - someone looking for entry level MTB at the same price point. Were I you, I'd strongly look at the Giant Boulder, Specialized Rockhopper and the Trek 4300.

    Hi. Welcome to the forum.

Everyone else. Anything like that again and there'll be no warning bans for a week for all that start, and those who respond. Report a post if you feel it is flaming or trolling and I will look into it. Respond and you're worse than the original poster.
