Hey, i was wondering if anyone can help me.

I have a dell dimension 4600 and i'm having trouble starting it up. Recently, when i unplug it from the mains if i'm out for the day or overnight and when i plug it in and try to turn it on, nothing happens for ages. It usually takes a half hour before the power kicks in to start it up.
On the odd occasion the lights on the front start flashing like the power is coming and going.

If anyone knows of anything or has seen something familiar i'd appreciate any advice.

    Thanks

Sorry to ask what prob' a stupid question but do you keep the machine in a cold place when not used?

Sounds at first like a dodgy internal power unit box to be honest.

No, it's in a fairly warm dry place in my room.

The next step I would take would be to - very carefully - remove the power supply unit and give it a good eyeball inspection to see if anything is wrong. Opened up a PSU one year and found 3 cups worth of dust.

My Pc would'nt start once. I bought a new power supply and installed it and it still wouldnt start. Luckily PC World took it back. Scratching my head I decided to strip it all down and re-build it out of the case. Hey presto, Worked fine. When I put it back in the case it would'nt work, I worked out it was a broken usb port and one of its pins was touching my case. It took about 48 hours and a load of driving to discover it.

I'll have a close look at the power supply unit. Seems to be where the problem is.

    Thanks for the advice guys.
