Cycling forum, I call upon thee for some bicycle-related advice, your knowledge of all things on two wheels never ceases to impress.

With the upcoming Bike Week running from the 14th to the 21st of June, numerous radio stations have been giving away prizes of brand new bicycles on the radio, and I managed to win one last Friday. Hooray!! \o/

The people on the phone tell me that it'll be a voucher for €375. No mention of whether it's in a certain shop or whether it will cover gear or just the bike.

Either way, I don't mind spending a hundred or so more if it means getting a better bike.

I'm currently rocking a Reflex Tornado, and it's lovely and fast for the Blackrock -> Ballsbridge commute and the odd jaunt about the neighbourhood on nice evenings. However, I think I may hand this over to the younger brother who'll be starting college in September and invest in something new myself. It's only about a year and a half old, but I've been fairly harsh on it (first racer). I've replaced the pedals, both tyres have been patched a few times and then replaced, and it's currently in the shop getting a new gear disc.

What I'm looking for is something handy for the work commute, but also something that will be able to handle the roads out in Connemara when I whizz off back to college there in September. I'm thinking maybe a hybrid, but I'm not too sure how far the voucher will get me.

Any and all advice much appreciated.

    Yours sincerely,
    Ronny

    Yo Ronny,
I'm afraid you said 'rocking' so you forgo any useful advice and get me instead!

Go for a roadbike if you are going to be going on decent spins, it's worth it. Just head over to chainreactioncycles.com, look at the road bikes and buy the most expensive one you can afford.

If you are limited to Halfords, I hear boardmann's are good.

    Bit of an update.

Seems the voucher is only good in eurocycles stores so I'm gonna head in to South William St on Saturday and see how I fare.

Looking at their website, they seem to deal mainly with just Raleigh bikes.

I like the look of this Pioneer Metro LX. Anyone reckon if it's good value for money at €357?

Or is there anything else here that looks like a better deal?

Yeah, let's hope the voucher price was just an estimate and that it's good for any bike.

The Felt bikes look alright, but I'll need to throw a few extra euro in to get one.
