Have got Goo (great record), Experimental Jet Set (mixed bag) and Sonic Nurse (decent) but would like to get into more SY. Where to start with the rest though as they have about 20 albums?

'Daydream nation' seems to be the quintessential SY album to have, also 'Sister' as well (I'd say sister is better of the two). 'Washing machine' and 'Dirty' are highly recommended. You really can't go wrong with SY, they're fairly consistent with all their albums, but watch out for the SYR series, some hit or misses there.

EVOL,Sister,Daydream Nation are the equal of anything the US underground produced in the 1980's

Quiet you! Back in your box!

I would definitely go out and pick up Daydream Nation OP. Also Dirty, the Dirty Boots EP, Sister, Washing Machine and Murray Street.

+1 on dirty and dirty boots (fairly accesible)

after goo, their most accessible albums would probably be dirty, daydream nation and murray street. all very good and worth checking out.

a good compilation to get your hands on is screaming fields of sonic love. It contains the best of their early years.

There's also a live album called hold that tiger that's worth checking out. It was recorded around the time of sister. Personally, I think it sounds better than sister.

One that's worth checking out down the line is 1000 leaves, it's unusual but has some of their best material (hoarfrost, hits of sunshine)

don't bother with nyc ghosts and flowers. after a really good 1st track, it goes to muck

    +1

    I personally love Sonic Nurse...

First song of theirs I heard was Disappearer off Goo - changed my music tastes forever, what a song! Daydream nation is an obvious classic.

As mentioned before, Dirty is fairly accessable, some real hi-energy stuff like purr and chapel hill...

Ahhh SY, havn't listened to them in a few months...must give em a spin!

The first album I got was EVOL, some really good stuff on that.

But I'm also gonna +1 on Daydream Nation. Any album that starts with Teen Age Riot...

EVOL is one of my favourite LPs of all time. Made space for it again this weekend. SY leave lots of people divided. I know of music lovers who didn't hear them in their teens and found them hard work to get into in their twenties (where they had less time/patience to get acquainted with LPs). I heard them when I was around 15 and they left an indelible mark at an impressionable time, when every note and lyric mattered. Also love Daydream Nation and must re-purchase Sister.

    Nice.

If I don't get the money together to see them at Nightmare Before Christmas ATP with My Bloody Valentine then I'll definitely be at this.

Listen to The Eternal. I think it would be a good place to start because it doesn't really see them deviate from their signature sound, so you get a good idea of band's ethos. Totally reliable SY album. It's now streaming on their website. You can listen to it here http://www.sonicyouth.com/main/eternalstream.html

Flip! Feck! I'll probably be doing exams around then. Feck it anyway.

Daydream Nation, Dirty and Washing Machine are all perfect starting points.

Rather Ripped is a good album and accessible. Funny I hated Washing Machine at first but a lot of people are recommending it.

I'd totally forgotten about their new album because of exams. Definitely gonna get it tomorrow. It's out isn't it?

Doesn't get any better than 'Daydream Nation' - the quintessential indie soundtrack of disaffected American youth.

By the way, really showing my age here - but last time I saw sonic youth live was in the Top Hat in Dun Laoghaire in August 1990.. and who supported them? A little known combo called Nirvana!!

My uncle was at that gig. I would have loved to be there but sure I was only 11 at the time.

Bits of it are featured in The Year Punk Broke.

Is vicar street not a bit of small venue for sonic youth ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭whiterob81

apparently not, there's still ground floor tickets available. Got my tickets on saturday. Lookin forward to it already.

went to see them in the olympia 10 years ago, from what I can remember of that gig, all the balconies were empty. From what I can gather, they seem to be one of those bands people will check out at a festival but never seem to be able to generate much interest in their own gigs. at least not in ireland anyways

When Sonic Youth headlined Lollapalooza years ago they pointed out in an interview that while a lot of the bands that were supporting them cited them as an influence Sonic Youth hadn't sold half as many records as any of them.

They are always one of those bands with a loyal fanbase that are critically acclaimed but never sell the amount they deserve.
