car insurance & log book

I finally bought a car on Friday and filled in the change of ownership form - obviously it will take a bit of time before it's in my name but I'm wondering if I could sort my insurance out in the mean-time or if I need to have the log book back in my name before I do that?

I understand I'd need the insurance and log book sorted when I go to tax the car but with insurance can it be in someone else's name or does that make a difference either way?

    Thanks for any help,

All you need for incurance is the car make, model, & reg. The car can be insured in anyones name for tax, but many ins cos require that the car be registered to the proposer.

Technically, as far as insurers are concerned, once the cash is handed over, the new owner can insure it.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but Im after buying a car myself and the logbook is been sent off tomorrow. The tax is out a month, so is their anyway to tax it while Im waiting for the logbook? I dont really want to drive without it but tis the only means of transportation I have.

Not really no. We can't say you can drive it, because legally you can't, but you know the implications of getting caught without tax. Although unless your meet a gard on a bad day, considering you bought the car and are waiting to tax it, the implications shouldn't be too severe. If you are going to drive it, bring a motor tax renewal form, filled out, with you at all times.

How long does it tend to take to get a log book back after the change of driver form being sent out?

In my experience, around a fortnight. You can check for progress on www.motortax.ie.

I handed mine into Dublin City Motor Tax Office on a Tuesday and received it back in the post on Friday morning.

It might take longer if you sent it off by post.

Thanks - hopefully it's sooner rather than later!

Thanks but can't check on that - don't have the last PIN number and the chasis number won't give me access.

The garage is sending it / has sent it in, not sure if they're going to post it or dropping it in somewhere. Hopefully post isn't too much longer.

I was just about to start a thread on this, but this is kinda covering what I'm going to ask!

I just bought a used car, it needs an NCT and Tax (I insured it) but I can't get an NCT because the WHOLE country is booked up till about October (its ridiculous!) So I don't think I can tax it either can I? (I'm a little unsure of the rules on this... I'm from the UK) but if its anything like the UK, you can't tax it without the insurance or NCT (MOT for us)

So can I tax it without NCT?

I know "technically / legally" shouldn't be driving it, but its only means of transport, so just have to risk it, but if I can at least tax / insure it and have booking letter and proof of purchase to show I've only just got it, if I do get stopped, hopefully it will be a reasonable garda...!!!

Just a final question on this -

If I see on MotorTax.ie that the car's ownership has changed but I haven't physically gotten the log book back can I go in and tax the car (assuming I have the various details needed), or do I need to bring the log book with me the first time?

You can tax the car without an NCT. If you keep a close eye on the NCT website for cancellations and are flexible as regards time you should get a cancellation within 1-2 weeks. I've NCTd two cars recently, both originally booked within the last month.
