Will you pre-order Modern Warfare 2?

Just wondering if people here will/have preordered MW2, and if so where and why? (Why where, not why did you pre-order)

Hearing rumours about availability crises already so wondering if there's anywhere dependable online for such things? I suppose GTA IV was the last comparable release. Any good news stories about ordering that online and receiving it close to release day?

Otherwise I guess I'll just order it from my local Game and pay the premium. At least that way I'll have somebody to shout at if I'm left empty handed.

I'll be preordering it. At the moment I'm trying out gamesnash.ie's trade in service with the disappointment that was World At War (they're giving me €30 for it). If it all works out I'll be buying it off them.

The game is not due out for another 4 months. Why would you start pre-ordering so early? I don't see the point and also I can bet that the game won't sell out so fast. Yes the game will be big, but not big enough to sell out straight away.

    I'm ordering it from videogamesplus.ca

They'll send it 1 day before the US release date, so i should make it in time for the Euro release which should be a few days later.

Plus if i get it from the US i won't have any connection probs connecting to my friends(all of them in the us), when CoD4 was released it took like 3 months for them to release the euro connectivity patch on PS3

Plus i can get the map packs cheaper :)

I really dont buy into this pre ordering hype.
When GTA4 came out last year there was plenty of stock everywhere to satisfy demand, as in I myself walked into game and just bought it straight off the shelves without pre ordering. Supposedly if you didnt pre order you would not get it for "weeks" after it was released, at least this is what I was told in some shops.
Some shops AFAIK are taking pre orders on this game, yes it will be the biggest game to come out in years, but there will be generally enough stock everywhere to satisfy demand.

That's pretty much the case in larger cities and towns I think, but outside of that you can run into problems I think. I vaguely remember people on the boards having trouble finding GTAIV in some shops. As some only got in enough to fill their pre-orders. I've never had trouble picking up a game here in Cork though.

I never pre order so don't see myself starting now. Only game I ever had trouble getting on launch day was GTA San Andreas

You're right on that a lot of the time it is hype and if you go out on release day you're hardly ever going to have trouble finding a copy.

That said GTA4 did sell out and was very difficult to get in Ireland a couple of days after release day until a couple of weeks later when the second wave of stock arrived. GTA4 was allocated rather than distributed by order quantities ( the amount of orders from retailers exceeded supply for release day - so all retailers were given a percentage of their orders. ) There were some stores who overbooked their pre orders and were unable to fulfill the demand from people who had already paid deposits. Then again there were other stores 2 doors away with plenty of stock. After the initial release day frenzy even these stores ran out. There were waiting lists in most retailers and I included ourselves in that because we ended up taking "pre orders" for the second batch.

MW2 will be bigger than GTA4 - well it's widely expected to be anyway :) - an awful lot will depend on how close to release day they complete the game. The more time = the more units that can be manufactured for release day. I'd still be surprised to be honest if you couldn't get a copy on release day but it might take a bit of searching. If left for the weekend after release day every chance you won't find it.

I'll probably prebook with Gamesnash or shopto.net.

I remember people saying that you wouldn't get GTA IV on launch day without a pre-order. I just went down to Henry Street in the morning and picked it up. I suspect I will do the same with Modern Warfare 2.

ill prob only pre-order if my local xtravision is doing a midnight launch the same as gta, id like to get stuck into the multiplayer straight away but i imagine the servers will be f**ked for the first week or so anyway so people who dont get on release day wont miss 2 much apart from SP.

I couldnt see the point of pre-ordering, you could get it at a later date

How can there be an availability crisis for a game that hasn't even gone gold (I assume) and off to press yet:confused:
If there is a crisis, I'm sure 4 months should be more than enough time for the publishers to act on it!

Will be preordering it from Play myself, but if I was still in Ireland I'd be using gamesnash or more likely VG+ (I'm sure it'll be great, but I can live without it on the release date)

Only game i've ever preordered was COD5. They never rank out of stock but it felt good walking by everyone else queing up for it and picking up my reserved copy. I got such dirty looks...

There's no way there'll be availability prices with this game. I've never seen a game sell out on launch. Console maybe but not a game. Even the with the craziness of Ocarina of Time a little hunting around would find you plenty of copies.

I hear they're only making one copy and putting it on eBay. Hoping that the eventual winning bid would be worth even more than selling 2 million on day 1. Also if you are the winning bid you get a ridiculous moustache and they let you shoot someone for real with a M4.

I bid €2M, a well thumbed copy of GQ, a half packet of tayto and a FULL packet of peanut M&Ms.

I could match the €2M, however the half packet of tayto is something that i cannot match...

How about a half packet of walkers? :O

put €5 off it on friday. not worried bout it selling out so much, but it means im guaranteed (sp?) to get it, and it will be that €5 cheaper on the day :)

The problem with preordering you'll find is you'll pay 65-70 on the day and then find somewhere like tesco is selling it for 40.

I wont be pre-booking it anywhere i will prob order it on line from games nash i know that more or less the same thing but im in no doubt that there will be enough for everyone on release day. GTA had to cause a stirr when being released because well it was pretty rubbish.

Can't understand why people buy into this "pre booking" hype. There's a lot of games hyped beyond belief but are awful let downs when they eventually arrive, e.g.
Haze - oh God what an awful piece of dung
GTA IV - took itself far too seriously and wasn't anywhere near as fun to play as all the previous GTA games.
Far Cry 2 - again it suckered in the likes of me who thought it would be similar to the original but was just another generic repetitive shooter with the annoying malaria routine thrown in for good measure.
COD WAW - average at best but a massive let down following the superlative COD4

Now I hope the developers do not sully the memory of COD 4 by making a sh1te follow up but I for one will not be standing in the rain for a midnight launch, or parting with the dosh for an early copy. Anyways, from my experience, Smyths and HMV do special low price introductory offers on some games that are close to or even beat the online retailers, and they always seem to have plenty of stock.

Finally, even if you don't get one on launch day, will a wait of a week or two kill ya? You can spend your time waiting by replaying the untouchable COD4 to brush up on your skills.

in xtravision when you pre book it you get a free COD T-shirt! anyone else heard of any deals for pre-booking it like in gamestop when you prebooked GTA4 you got 500 free microsoft points

my friend peebooked it in xtravision in cork and they said that to him anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,283 ✭✭✭Glico Man

i dont and never will bother pre ordering games cos you will find that one shop sells it for less than another. walking round Cork when Killzone 2 was released i found that it was €10 cheaper in Game than it was in Smyths and then you have the various Xtravisions and also HMV. it pays, for me anyway, to have a look around before buying games. I also got Infamous and Godfather 2 for less in Game than in Smyths

would say you wont have that much bother getting it tbh i'll be getting it for the pc on steam so not to worried
