40GB Vs 80GB

Hi all,

Just about ready to buy a PS3. Been a xbox360 user for years now but wanted a change,

Was wondering what the advantages are of getting the bigger HD ?

I take it you can download games directly to the machine?
How much cheaper do the games work out ?

You can download some games from PSN, but none have any major memory.

I'd recommend that if you plan to save videos, songs, pics, etc. on your PS3, get the 80GB. If you'll only be playing/saving games, go for the cheaper 40GB.

The majority of games available for download on the PSN arent available to buy in the shops,most of them are cheaply priced tho on the PSN and AFAIK 40GB PS3 arent sold anymore?

I got an 80 but soon stuck a 320gb HDD in. Love having so many movies, tv shows, albums etc on there and never having to worry about installs or psn downloads again.

ah i'm gonna get the 40gb if i can, I wont be putting movies or songs on it. I thought you could download the new games directly to it.

You mean you thought you could rent a game from XV for a night, rip it to your HDD and then play it after you hsve returned the disc?

Yeah with a 40gb you could install around 6 games I guess. I much prfer watching movie files on my tv rather than my pc. True there are media players for this but its a nice bonus.

i got a 160gb, over time you will have so many required installs and updates of games it will really affect your memory. Theres nearly 70 gb of required installs on my system, so best option is to buy the 40gb and with the money you save get a 320 gb hdd and install it from the get so, so you wont have to back up data later on.( which can be a pain)

With the price of hard drives and the ease in which you upgrade the ps3's disk there's no justification for buying the 80gig unless its the same price as the 40.

Go for a 40Gb. For the price difference you can get a much bigger hard disk than 80Gb and upgrade.

Doesn't the new 80GB console include a DualShock controller, though? My 40GB came with a regular one.

I would recommend changing the hard drive anyway, my current usage is 82GB and I don't have any music or videos on the drive (I stream it from the PC) - just game installs, save games and PSN stuff.

Unless I'm mis-reading you ..... WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG and a little more WRONG!!!

There are many, many PSN games that are over 1GB in size. This is NOT small by an accounts [when thinking of a 40GB drive]. Wipeout and Burnout Paradise just being two. There are many more.

Also, there are many downloadable demos for retail only games that are usually in or around or even much more than 1GB.

Then think of game updates, DLC, Game trailers, E3 video's, [game saves can be anywhere up to 8MB each*] etc 40GB will fill right up in no time.


* Why the hell ANY game developer needs this much space for game saves is beyond me? Pure laziness.... and sloppy programing.

the PDN ( arcade ) kind of games are small 1 gbish but you can also download some retail games , Socom, Syrien, GT prologue. All a good few GB.

I have a 60 gb launch ps3 i was allways having to delete stuff to make room untill i found the file where the games saves info are saved, found tons of GB after GB of old files from games i had traded in save info and install info cleared that all out havent had a problem since.

I Dont copy any video or music to the PS3 i either stream from a Laptop or jusst use those site you can stream from.

I was in the same boat. I just went for the 40GB, not gonna save any music or games to it as I just keep them on an external HD.

It will fill up in about a year or less then I'll just buy a 320GB (getting cheaper by the day!) and move the stuff over to it and that should keep me going until Xbox 720 or whatever its gonna be!
