depends on the area you want to cover - is it news coverage/features etc.

contact various editors? see if they have any work (unlikely but at least they will know you are available)

you could do music reviews/previews, sports reviews/previews etc

theres plenty of stories which are missed - its all about choosing an area and becoming the best in that area....(if not the best then you can settle for highly regarded)
