A Tribute to Ma Yueliang

Yea, Ma was a controversial figure, with “fast forms” etc. I believe that he had a set of Tai Chi Nei Gung (as opposed to the “Daoist” variety which cannot really be considered a martial Nei Gung) which was lost or just not taught through the Kung Yi lineage. I know that Cheng Tin Hung’s uncle was only taught the yin and 8 of the 12 yang exercises by Wu Jian Quan. Tin Hung learnt the rest from Qi Min Quan. This gives Ma’s claims to a more complete system more credence in my eyes anyway. Although I can’t say I have a high opinion of Kung Yi, he’s a bit like Yang Cheng Fu trading in the family business without demonstration any martial merit; the “fight” was the worst bout I have ever seen, devoid of any virtue.
Have you seen a video on YouTube of a Li (Wang Lan Ting) style, very impressive form full of long low postures done with a martial intent, and definitely capable of enhancing dynamic moving / throwing abilities? It contains the famously absent in Yang and Wu styles double kick and fa jing movements, without it being a Tong Bai influenced Chen style.
The Li Form wouldn’t have had any Tai Chi cross fertilisation since Lu Chan’s time. (Here I refer to the theories that Yang Cheng Fu and Wu Jian Quan “slowed” down their forms for the more fragile but wealthier students they began teaching in post imperial China.)
Also Li I Yu’s Plane Sayings are interesting if authentic, re. The forms practiced back in the day.
