Boxoffice takings are well known but I don't think I've ever heard of what a
movie took on home sales how to the two stack up ?

Watching Box office takings tend to focus on opening weekends and tends to be judged by comparing the same weekends the prior year (2005 considered the worse year in recent memory, was primarily bad because when compared to 2004 [spiderman 2, shrek 2 etc] it came up short)

Watching dvd sales tends to be less strict in that manner and focus more on sales over longer periods.

I dont know about comparing them against each other though.

DVD sales are usually factored in to a budget. There's some which exist in their own space like the LoTR but others like Shawshank Redemption I believe made more money through video/laserdisc/dvd sales than it did at cinemas (also got more praise ).
