My GF has gone travelling and is missing her english tv. The BBC offer I Player to UK residents to watch their content but obviously as she isn't in the UK it won't work.

Is there a way to either set it up that it looks to IPlayer that she has a UK IP or can she somehow use my pc to do it?

Or have I got it completely wrong and that wouldn't work?

you need to use a proxy server, i've no idea where you'll find one...

Is it something I could set up on my own machine?

EDIT: Just downloaded Hamachi.... That might work...

1 months proxy cost £6 a few months back. How long is she gone traveling for, and what's here level of computer knowledge?

Use a public proxy, or set one up yourself as you've stated for a more reliable service.

Didn't realise it was as easy as it was. I've got it going through my pc already but it runs slowly. I can see now there are public proxies as well and she might invest in one of them for better service.

Unless I'm missing something here, I wouldn't advise setting up a proxy server on your own hardware facing your own ISP connection. You could have all sorts of muppets routing all sorts of crap through your line. There gas to be public/anonymous proxies based in the UK she could use. Another option would be to find shell access to a machine in the UK and use putty or the likes to create a tunnel.

I used hamachi and privoxy to set up a VPN and whilst it works it's a little slow apparently. Can someone explain precisely what is happening in this case?

Is it her requests come to my machine, my machine then completes the request and forwards it on to her? Therefore, trying to use iplayer means it's limited by my upload speed? Or have I got it totally wrong?

Seeing as hamachi is password protected how am I leaving myself open VE?

I did run a quick search for public ones and will investigate more tomorrow and that will probably be the way to go if my upload speed is a limiting factor in all of this.
