Games for 7 year old and parent?

I have just finished playing Phantom Hourglass with my 7 year old. We played through the game together, helping each other out and generally bonding :D Great game btw.

I have run out of ideas now though, have played Lego Star Wars, Indiana Jones & Batman. We tried Spyro and he wasn't mad about it, at the time. We played Super Mario Sunshine together on GC and that was great too. We would play Mario Party and Animal Crossing regularly enough. He is gone past the Dora/Deigo/Nicktoons type of game.

So, my question...........can anyone recommend a game not too difficult for a 7 year old (or his mother), ideally not so hard that we get fed up, but gives us lots to chat about with no time limits (like there can be in platformers)...........a game we can meander through in our own time? Have been reading through some reviews at IGN but there are so many games I would appreciate some direction.

    Thanks.

If you have a Wii, I highly recommend Super Mario Galaxy. If he liked Sunshine he should love it. It's bigger, more action-packed and bursting with fantastic ideas. He should be well able for it too -- most of it is a lot easier than Sunshine (though Galaxy is far more fun and all round the better game, imo). It's also got a "helper" mode where a second player can jump in at any time and move a cursor around the screen, helping Mario out.

New Super Mario Bros on DS is in a similar style, though it's an old-style 2D platformer rather than a 3D one. The stages are timed, but the time limit is really generous. In fact, the level design encourages you to take your time and hunt out secrets, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (they're all the same, pretty much) are great games. Kids still like Pokémon, right? They're quite complicated games but the start of the games do a great job of introducing all the various rules gradually and intuitively. It won't be a problem for your son as long as he has a good basic reading ability (bear in mind there's lots of text all the way through), but if you're only jumping in now and then to help him out you might find it a bit overwhelming yourself! Also, beware Pokémon Ranger/Mystery Dungeon/Link -- they're all completely different different games and they're all rubbish.

Edit: Also check out Zelda: the Wind Waker for the Gamecube. Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to it and they both play similarly, though Wind Waker has more traditional controls, obviously. It's great!

Plants vs zombies is a great game its just mindless hours of fun though thats for the pc.
Cant go wrong with pokemon sure I would still play it if I got the chance.
All Mario Games there all great kids love them and adults alike also any cartoon games like sonic and things also.
If your not worried about age ratings you could get somthing like tekken or dead or alive. All great games and are fun to play even just button bashing though they may be to aggressive for a 7 year old.

We each have a DS, don't think I made that clear and we each play the game on our own carts, but just at the same time.

He has gone through all the Pokemon games himself (had to start getting GBA ones to keep him going) and has done all of the Mario etc platformers. I might see if I can get Digimon World, its kind of pokemon but new for him and might be ok for me.

I suppose I am really looking for another Zelda Phantom Hourglass and I can't find anything like it. Guess I will have to wait for Spirit Tracks:(

Off to trawl through the list of RPGs..........................

    Thanks everyone.

The two GBA Zeldas -- A Link To The Past and Minish Cap -- might be worth checking out.

If he likes 2D platformers, Wario Land: the Shake Dimension (Wii) is great. It's a bit slower and more puzzly than Mario and it looks gorgeous.

Also, you can download old SNES, Mega Drive etc games from the Wii Ship Channel. You should find lots of suitable stuff there. I'd recommend:
    Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 & 3 (SNES)
    Super Mario World (SNES)
Zelda: A Link To The Past (SNES)
    Super Mario RPG (SNES)
    Super Punch Out!! (SNES)
    Super Mario 64 (N64)
    Mario Kart 64 (N64)
    Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
    Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
    Lylat Wars (N64)
    Paper Mario (N64)
    Pokemon Snap (N64)
    Mario Golf (N64)
    Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 & 3 (Mega Drive)
    Ristar (Mega Drive)

The House of the Dead: Overkill is a fairly straight forward game that's lots of fun!

How about a bit of Mario and Luigi Partners in Time? I'm not sure if you have played it or not but its a brilliant,(easy enough for a 7 year old) game.

Or if you still have your Cube (or a Wii), Pikmin 2 is a classic.

Fun and all as House of the Dead: Overkill is, it's REALLY REALLY not a game you'd sit down to play with your 7 year old...

I'd recommend Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It's like the games you are playing like Mario etc., and it has a nice little mode where you can raise Pokemon/Tamogatchi type creature called Chao's. I enjoyed playing this for many hours with my little bro.

+1 for Mario Kart 64 and Lylat Wars both for N64.

I played these games with my friends nephew and cousins (aged from 7-10) and they enjoyed them.

Another good game but don't know if it's appropriate is Goldeneye. It's up to you to decide if you want to introduce your child to that kind of violence but the kids I played with seemed to like it, but it's not as bad as House of The Dead that someone else suggested

7 might be a bit young, but my 9 year old sister likes Professor Layton and the Curious Village.

    <_<

    >_>

And myself and my gf both love it... ^_^

Now thats interesting............Professor Layton. I have played it and loved it myself, but it would be ideal to work out the puzzles together.

I have started playing one "Magicians Quest: Mysterious times" (Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry is the EU name) accurately described as a cross between Animal Crossing WW and Harry Potter. It takes a bit of time to get the hang of whats going on but its worth keeping at it. Its a must for anyone who loved ACWW, there is more to do so hopefully it won't get repetitive as quickly as ACWW did. It would be good for playing with an older child, but the child would need help initially.

I saw in another thread that someone mentioned Golden Sun (?) for Gamboy (?), will look into that too, the poster said they loved it as a child, so fingers crossed :)

Hardcore gamers can now post their abuse :P

Thanks to all for input :)

never played but paper mario looks good.
its 2d like classic mario but you can switch to 3d when it looks like you are stuck to give other options to progress.

it's on the wii but i think someone posted that it's on the gc too.

I presume that you have played Mario Kart DS together? If not, that should be top of your list.

Have played both...........its only when I look at all the suggestions that I realise how much we have gone through :o
