If you have the red Edco irish exam papers, i think there is an essay on poverty at the front of it! ;)

So there is, I never noticed it before!

Do people think the recession is more or less guaranteed to come up? It's the only essay I really know well...

i had this typed up at one point last year so i think there may be some things out of date by now but anyway...

A fhad is a bhí an cat mór ceilteach i mbarr a réime níor chulathas an frása cúlú eacnamaíóchta ar bheola aois óg na hÉireann. Ciorruithe, dífhostaíocht, fadhbanna airgeadais, dól agus imircigh - is beag tuiscint atá ag daoine a rugadh tar éis na bliana 1979 ar na focail sin. Rugadh agus togadh iad in am na flúirse agus ní thuigeann siad saol ar bith eile. Ó thús na bliana 2008, áfach, at taoide na heacnamaíochta ag casadh. Tá an geimhreadh buailte linn ar go leor bealaí - na hoícheanta ag dul i bhfad agus fallaing na fuachta fáiscthe tharainn ag drochscéal i ndiaidh drochscéal faoin euro inár bpocaí.

Le deich mblian anuas bhí an tír seo ar mhuin ma muice, nó ar mhuin an tíogair. Bhí neart postanna againn, pá ard agus imircigh ag triall orainn ina sluaite. Bhí scolairí óga in ann postanna páirtaimseartha a fháil agus pá brea acu chun a saol sóisialta agus a gcuid siopadóireachta a cheadú agus ár gcuid tuismitheoirí sásta neart airgid a chaitheamh ar ranganna breise agus scoileanna príobháideacha. Chuamar i gcleacthadh ar bhéilí daora, laethanta saoire agus carranna galánta. Bhí an rialtas ábalta deireadh a chur le taillí tríú leibhéal, caitheadh a lán airgid ar infrastruchtúir - ar bhóithre, ar áiseanna spóirt agus siamsaíochta agus ar chúrsaí oideachais. Bhí daoine sásta Fianna Fáil a fhágail i gcumhact le deich mbliana.

Ach ní bhíonn in aon rud ach seal (wasn't anything but a spell / period of time) agus tá an balún sin pléasctha anois. Thosaigh cúrsaí ag athrú i samhradh na bliana 2008. An chéad rud a tharla ná gur thosaigh géarchéim i gcúrsaí tithíochta sa mhéad is gur thit praghas na dtithe go tubaiste: níl tógálaithe in ann tithe daora a dhíol ná na bainc a aisíoc agus tá an córas baincéíreachta i mbaol dá bharr. Seo iad na bainc chéanna a d'íoc na milliúin lena stiúrthóirí agus a bhí ag mealladh daoine óga morgaistí 100% a ghlacadh. Tá na húineéírí sin i dtrioblóid anois ach tá scéim bharántais curtha i bhfeidhm chun eacnamaíoch na tíre a chosaint. Ach tá fadhbanna airgeadais ag pobal na hÉireann. Tá morgáistí arda acu agus níl sé d'acmhainn ag neart daoine na haisíocaíóchta a dhéanamh. Is léir nach iad an saibhir ná an santach a íocfaidh as a gcuid dearmad féin (it's clear it's not the rich or greedy that pay for their own mistakes).

Anuas air sin, tá an chosúacht ar an scéal go bhfuil dífhostaíocht i ndán do chuid mhór daoine sa tír seo. Tá póist á gcailliúint san earnáil tógála, san earnáil déantúsaíóchta agus in earnáilna seirbhísí poiblí. Tá líon na ndaoine atá ag clárú le haghaidh an dóil ag ardú la i ndiaidh lae. De réir an Taoisigh Brian Cowen, is dócha go mbeidh timpeall 400,000 duine dífhostaithe ag deireadh na bliana seo. Beidh go leor de na daoine sin ag brath ar chúnamh dífhostaíochta nó sochar sóisialta, rud a chuirfidh go mór le fadhbanna airgeadais na tíre. Gan dabht ar bith, tá deireadh tagtha le ré an ábharchais agus ré an rachmais. Ach an chuid is measa den scéal ná gurb iad na daoine atá ag fulaingt cheana féin a bheidh i gcruachás: seandaoine, daoine le riachtanais speisialta agus daoine ar imeall na sochaí. Is beag a chonaic siadsen den Tíogair flaithiúil ar an nós ach anois is iad is mó a aireoidh uathu é.

Tá monarchana agus gnóthaí ag dúnadh síos agus tá cuid mhaith oibrithe ag cailliúint a bpostanna dá bharr. ta drochthionchar ag an gcúlú eacnamaíochta ar thionscal na turasoireachta agus ar infheistíoct ó chomhlachtaí móra idirnáisiúinta sa tír seo. ta dochar á dhéanamh ag an gcnagadh creidmheasa (credit crunch) ar ghnóthaí beaga, ar siopaí, ar ostáin, ar bhialanna agus ar gach gné de shaol gnó na tíre de bharr na géarchéime agus de bhrí nach bhfuil airgead le caitheamh ag daoine.

Tá bóthar achrannach romhainn mar phobal. Deir na saineolaithe go leanfaidh an ghéarchéim eacnamaíochta ar feadh dhá nó trí bliana fiú agus nach bhfuil an chuid is measa di feicthe fó againn. Tá roghanna crua misniúla de dhíth agus de dhíth go géar. Ach tá ceacht ann dúinne fosta. Is fúinne a bheith ciallmhar agus tuiscint éigin a fháil ar chursaí airgid. An gá dúínn fiche péire bróg a cheannach? An dteastaíonn tithe saoire uainn sa Tuirc? Thuas seal thíos seal a deir an seanfhocal agus b'fhéidir nach aon dochar é seal a chaitheamh thíos ag foghlaim céard is tábhachtaí sa saol seo.

I'd say something along the lines of poverty, recession will come up. If it doesn't I'm screwed. It could come up as a debate though so you'd need to know how to start a debate. which I don't, but will hopefully have learned by tomorrow

how can recession come up as a debate! if anything, it'll be the essay!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭snazzy

A debate could come up as 'Life in Ireland is good/bad'
    Discuss.

And if Poverty comes up you could twist it to fit the recession as long as it doesn't specify the third world.

I'm going to learn an essay on heritage as well today just in case something like Gaeilge inniu or Tirghrá comes up.

I'm not studying a recession essay cos I'm determined to do a debate (God help me if I get a nasty motion...) and I hope that you can't really debate a recession.

The newspaper 'alt' might be handy enough. It's the same format as an aiste would be.

    And how did you do?
Were you punished for not talking about other countries as much?
