If the control panel says the ports are ok, it could point to the ports been blown (shorted). In which case you can't fix. New Motherboard is the only option around that that I can think of.

However, check your BIOS on startup. Maybe someone disabled the USB ports from there. To get to your BIOS, on startup Press "del" or "f2" will usually get you there. You have to be quick and press it when prompted. Look for anything which mentions "USB". If its disabled then enable it. Wont do any damage as your ports already aren't working!

I do reckon it is the Motherboard. First instinct was that the USB ports are blown i'm afraid. Have you any other ports at the back of the PC? Do they work? If you have and they work its definately blown ports.

Oh, btw, dont bother with getting a new motherboard. Your warranty won't cover the damage as it was people caused and not a manufacturing fault. You can buy a USB card with multiple USB ports, which slots into a spare PCI slot on your motherboard. They're only about 10 or 15 quid and really easy to install.

thanks for that. the pins in the port got bent and made contact with the outer pins.this stoped all ports working. managed to straighten pins and filled port with blue tac, so other two work fine now.

Filling port with blue tac?! On the outside I assume? Usually when you bend pins they will work again once straightened out and allowing a connection.

If there gone, you can buy USB via PCI - no point buying a new motherboard for that.
