there has been lots of threads about cheap water on here recently.
but i have yet to see anything that beats tesco own brand 2l for just 39 cent.
i think dunnes have their own brand 2l for about the same as tesco.
you should try to work out what it costs per litre.
the river rock is 25 cent per litre
aldi above is 27 cent per litre
tesco just 20 cent per litre

Yep,i can vouch for the Tesco Discount Brands still water for 39c for 2ltrs.
Only they never seem to have enough of it in my area.
Great constant price unlike other things!

    Chris Rock on bottled water:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UI41PUQLkg8

But while funny, much more serious and to the point:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfPAjUvvnIc

Some salient points from the video:
    - 25 to 40% of all bottled water sold in the US is actually tap water
    - During a blind taste test 75% of people picked New York City tab water over an expensive bottled water.
    - During a taste test of multiple expensive bottled water, people could taste a real difference between the different brands (e.g.tastes glacial), in fact all the bottles were the same tap water filed using a garden hose :)
    - In the US tab water is held to higher safety standards then the bottled water. There are hundreds of people who test tap water in the US, while only one single person tests bottled water!!!

The best way to get water is to use filtered tap water.

They also did a blind vodka taste in New York and plain old Smirnoff beat all the really expensive brands.

Amazing that people are willing to pay for supermarket bought water yet get upset about metered water charges

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭Gregsor

No meter charges here, plus i don`t drink carbonated drinks so for me to fork out 39c for a 2ltr bottle of spring water bottled at source it`s still fair game to me.

I haven`t drank tap water in 8 years or so just out of preference really and probably because i consume 2 or more ltrs myself daily i`m happier to drink bottled, but i won`t pay ridiculous prices for it.

When i was in Oz last year the Queensland Govt were introducing fluoride to the water system for dental benefits, things like that may convince me to go back but then again they were begining to add recycled used water to the main supply aswell, that caused an uproar :(.

I think a lot of people buy bottled water to avoid the fluoride they add to the water here.fluoride is a bad chemical.(From articles I've read on the Internet I now buy bottled water and use fluoride free toothpaste.)

most countries have removed it from their water supply on health grounds. It's a chemical we don't need.

But tell me this, how do you know that the bottled spring water is actually spring water and not straight from a tap?

There is nothing stopping a company from calling their product spring water when it doesn't come from a spring, that is exactly what there were saying in the second video I linked to.

It is all a bit of a scam.

Independent tests done on Vittel and Volvic in the US found Arsenic in excess of California, World Health Organization, and European Union standards!!!

A third of all bottled water is found to contain contaminants.

River Rock is not spring water, it is the same tap water they use to make coke/fanta/sprite/etc without the extra chemicals and flavourings.

So really it's just tap water.

True it is unfortunate that companies can get away with doing so,like so many of our store bought goods these days with coverups and misleading the public or simply not declaring the proper ingredients or additives hidden under codes or second naming.

Still for 39c it says 1 ingredient Spring Water and it`s bottled at the Clearview Source i`m suckered.

Three of the country’s 26 bottled-water companies take their product from public supplies without telling customers.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has confirmed that three unnamed firms are effectively bottling tap water and selling it, and are not required to reveal the source of the drink on the label. The practice is legal so long as the water is safe to drink....

Yeah, River Rock is a Coca-Cola product. It was called Dasani in the UK and taken off the market because it was exposed as water direct from the bottling factories' taps. The fact that it's still sold here is testament to a) Coca Cola's marketing strength and b) the Irish people's gullibility and stupidity.

With regards to other bottled waters, one's that are bottled at source I guess are worth paying for, though most prices are extortionate. Most are at least as expensive as other soft drinks. Also, as per the Penn and Teller vid, you have no idea of the quality. Just because it's bottled at source doesn't mean it's any cleaner than tap water, and in most cases tap water is much cleaner as it has been extensively treated. I make a point of never buying bottled water unless there is no alternative available. Obviously people are welcome to waste their money as they see fit.

There is a more sinister side of course. The privitisation of water, while not an issue for us in the developed world, is certainly an issue for those in underdeveloped nations.

To be honest, I can't believe that bottled water caught on in this country. We have perfectly good free tap water. They might have a stab at selling us oxygen again...

    Sorry for the rant.

Unfortunately not all the tap water in Ireland is 'good'.

Also you do pay indirectly for it through your taxes.

Nearly all tap water in cities, which I'd imagine is where the majority of bottled water is consumed, is 'good'.

Though you are correct, we do pay for it through our taxes. Which begs the question, why pay for it twice?

Since this offer has EXPIRED, wouldn't consumer issues or another forum be a better place to discuss water quality.
