Halfords are rumoured to be changing their exchange rate next week. So it will mean we will get similar prices to sterling. Since its at around €1=0.86p at the moment id reckon we will get somthing like €1=£0.80

Not bad if you are looking at a decent bike.

yeah , I was talking to a supervisor in the local Halfords last week and he tipped me off that they were to have a "serious" price reduction in their Bikehuts nationwide to pricematch as close to sterling as possible . A Boardman I had my eye on ( but not anymore)retails at the minute for 1399 euro , he reckons that would come in just over the 1000 euro mark next week . If you're interested in the Boardman racing bike keep yer powder dry for a few days .

I don't think economic's is your strong point - that's a far worse rate and would make the products more expensive!

Em your getting 80p for your euro in Halfords possibly? Id imagine its somthing dumb like 60p for your euro at the moment.
Its only a rumour but I seen as many people have been intereste in boardman, I think its worth waiting a week.

Moving from €1=0.86p to €1=£0.80 would make the products more expensive.

Oh i'm pretty sure kona ment the market rate is 1euro = 86p so based on that if we do well we'd get about 1euro = 80p

Oh I mean its at 0.86 in the bank.

Halfords will give you .80 I reckon. dont know what its at now, probably .60 or somthing rediculous like that.

The exchange rate is currently 0.87427, or 1.14381 as I think of it (i.e. see a sterling price, multiply by 1.14381).

    Removing taxes from the equation, a £1150 bike -> £1000 before 15% VAT -> €1144 before 21.5% VAT -> €1390.

So a tax-neutral exchange rate would be 1.21, or 0.82.

In a fair world, the actual rate would overshoot to compensate for the months/years where we've been charged @ 1.50.

My maths could be very wrong, I'm multitasking.

Well, it would make a change considering how much they overcharge for accessories at the moment!

Halfords? Wild horses wouldnt drag me in there, never mind a favourable exchange rate.

The Carerra Gryphon (v brakes) went up from 340 to 374 though it's marked as down from 399

They have signs up saying "1000s of prices dropped". They got their finger out too and ....www.halfords.ie .......ta[/url] da!

Why is that such a big deal?I dont understand how shops are not giving the nearest to the full rate they can give, anything else is just greed.
jmc cycles just ouside newry are currently giving 95p to 1 euro. Shouldnt they all be doing similar?

An old friend of mine works in halfords and he told me last week that they were reducing their prices to compensate for sterling.

They currently use the exchance rate of 1 pound = 1.42 euro
They will be changing to a rate of 1 pound = 1.24 euro.

As far as i can remember these are the rates he quoted, might be off by a cent or 2 but there close enough.

He also said that all the price changes will be implemented by today the 11th.

Have my eye on the Boardman Team MBK so hopefully this will save me a few bob:)

That shop is quite stupid then, the euro and sterling is nowhere near parity now. £1=€0.83.

So unless they have a suicide wish I dont think they will be doing similar. Changing a exchange rate in one store is easy. Doing it across 20 stores that stock as much as halfords is a little bit more difficult.

It has nothin to do with "a suicide wish".It is obvious that large stores such as Halfords have huge overheads including staff (usually bad) which meanthis is passed on to the consumer. The customer service is never as good either.

boardman hybrid comp drops from 649 to 625.
    A massive €25 saving! pfft.

current rate should be €590 or so based on £499 in UK.

and take into account the extra 6% VAT and then add on another 4% or so for transport other overheads involved with being in ireland.

true enough, I was just expecting more than 25 off I guess! You had me excited.

Its cheaper for people in dublin to use halfords now as apposed to going up north it would seem.

Sly strategy from halfords, who ever comes up with these stunts is quite clever(for the halfords side.)

so whats that got to do with your previous argument?:confused:If seen plenty of LBS with **** staff, obnoxious owners, and none who had a clue what they were doing. Bad bike shops are everywhere, and in a chain as big as halfords it will be more pronounced.

Id be suprised if that shop in newry offered me 95p for my euro.

You should always pay in the local currency with a credit card (a Tesco one if you've got it) to get the best exchange rate.

Don't let the shop convert the price (not just bike shops, but any shop).

Just checked and even with then new prices I still saved about 175 Euros by getting my bike in Newry rather than south of the border.

whos put the bee in your bonnet! Price and service are BOTH relevant and from people I have talked to the service in halfords is not just more pronunced its practically non existant. My brother bought in jmccycles 2 days ago for your information and was given 95p to the Euro,so gets your facts right before you sound off.

So basically, Halfords are going to stop screwing the Irish?

    Thanks Halfords.
Funny how they can match sterling prices up north but have to mark up in the Republic, is there a 4% charge for crossing the border?

Er What I state is true. Some halfords stores in my experience is excellent.

I said Id be suprised if A company gave you 95p for your euro 2 days ago when the XE(banks to banks rate) has been around 10p lower at 86p for the euro for the past 2 weeks.

So on a thousand euro purchase the shop loses £100 blips? doubtful.

But Youve the secondhand info both about halfords and the LBS in newry. and ive the 3rd hand info on newry and personal experiece of halfords. I think Ill keep my Point of view.

A government study at Xmas, said its 6% more expensive to operate in Ireland as opposed to the UK. then add on another 6.5% vat and you get a huge 12.5% more expensive when €1=£1.

They aint screwing you as of monday, its the goverment now.

Its shocking how the match sterling prices in the north...... seeing as we're part of the UK and as such have UK rates of VAT - 15.5% vs 21.5%, wages - Your average 18 year old in halfords in NI will probably be getting around £4.65 per hour, whilst the same 18 year old in the ROI will be getting €8.65 for doing exactly the same job.

Buying in the ROI is always going to be more expensive, its just that during the celtic tiger years UK chains and many local shops went on the gouge extracting the maximum the market could support. As things stand I think the halfords ROI prices on some of the bikes mentioned is fine.

What.....? Makes no sense what you have said. You suggested I was telling porkies when I said my brother had got 95p to the Euro in jmc cycles, wrong!and I would hardly call it second hand info. Any time I have been to Halfords service was crap-fact! It is up to smaller shops what they take as a percentage profit .You are not aa ecconomist & neither am,I can only comment on the price given & the srvice which was considerably better than most greedy multinationals</p>
